I used to think New Vegas had amazing writing and was a great game. I still like it but looking back its a shallow technical piece of dogshit with horrible gameplay, broken quests, and okay but not particularly great writing.

Being on a shitty engine isn’t an excuse, and Bethesda wasn’t the reason. Every Obsidian game is like this. They aren’t good at making video games, they just have a few writers that are okay at their jobs.

Most of the cool lore was already laid out by Fallout 1 and 2, which were well polished and good games.

Fallout 3 was even worse but at least it wasn’t broken.

I still like both game, but probably just because I have always liked Bethesda games and Fallout. New Vegas and Fallout 3 are objectively bad games but they are sort of charming for some reason.

And? Bethesda failed to deliver a good continuation of that, Obsidian succeeded. The cool lore being set by previous game doesn't make it easier to deliver writing-wise, this was no small feat from Obsidian, yet you make it sound like writing cool lore is easy.

New Reddit will never be a real Fallout game, it's a FO3 DLC at best and a bad one at that. The entire game is filled with invisible walls and everything is scripted, there's not a SINGLE true random encounter in FNV, everything happens in the same way regardless of playthrough. Even "faction" encounters (Legion assassins / NCR Rangers) only appear in a select few (scripted) areas of the map. Speaking of which, the map SUCKS, everything in NV is stuck behind questlines, there is 0 incentive to proper exploration, not to mention how much equipment you get for free even if you don't use the starter packs. The writing can be described in: Democracy corrupt x Manchild who doesn't understand the authors he quotes. Every faction has glaring plot holes and everyone pretends not to see and blames it on the "muh 18 months of development" argument. Avelone wanted to include unkillable important NPCs in scripted sequences as well, the only thing holding him back was Jsawyer's direction (thank God). The only good thing to come out of New Reddit was the true iron sights and ammo variation (which would come eventually as the engine progresses ever new game release). This game is a disgrace to real RPG's. New Vegas is a glorified action game with speech checks, speech is the only skill that matters (it unlocks everything in the game for free) and literally has 0 charisma dependency (LMAO). There is only 1 optimal way to build characters in this game and it's to come out of the tutorial with 10 INT (or 9 at least) and 1 CHA, everything else is irrelevant as long as you level speech (combat and its options are a piss poor easy as fuck joke). This garbage will never stand up to the atmosphere kino that Fallout 3 is.

New Vegas was much better put together in a technical sense, but the half-insane feeling from unexpected encounters in FO3 is lightning in a bottle. Nobody told me about vault Gary and made a quest about it, nobody told me about the dunwich building. It felt more convincing that way.
NV should have been more open, but maybe lock Vegas main quest progress behind visiting the shitheaps? (or high level skill checks?). There's no chaning it now, outside of mods, and we'll never get anything else similar from that company.

Wow, now that I'm twice as I'm old as the average Yea Forums user, I can tell that the New Vegas' Walt Disney impersonator, the dress-wearing cannibals, football pad roman cosplayers, and the giant reptar guard post was clearly for adults.
Fallout New Vegas was in no way "more mature" than 3, they use a lot of similar themes, but Vegas gives them 10x more dialogue, which I really don't care for, especially in replaying it.
