Space games thread

has anyone tried everspace? it's an arcadey roguelite or like or whatever that plays like a modern freelancer as far as gameplay goes. i got a solid 20 hours in it and still pop on from time to time.
everspace 2 is in early access and its shaping up pretty well, with a story, NPCs, and everything. i wouldn't buy it yet, though.

I liked it, it reminds me a bit of a Freelancer mixed with Roguelite elements. I enjoy the fact they are ditching the roguelite part in Everspace 2.

It's a shame the space combat genre is in this semi dead state. I played FreeSpace 2 way after it was released and it was still an amazing game to play.

give me some good space rpgs like mass effect

knights of the old republic 1 and 2 but their combat is different
there might be a jap one i haven't heard of

does this actually have space exploration elements in it? I'm also kind of looking primarily for sci-fi stuff rather than fantasy/magic

no, not really. planets serve as hub worlds and you can explore around them but not like in ME1 and 2 where you could scan planets and stuff
i guess mass effect is one of a kind

>i guess mass effect is one of a kind
damn, basically I'm trying to get that feeling of lonely space travel to far off worlds but with interesting characters/locations and minimal colony sim/crafting elements

The only space game I have installed currently is Starsector. I'd really like to play something similar, but in 3D, flying my ship, doing random missions for factions, kinda like Anomaly (Stalker). I own Elite, but it's not worth playing without VR, and the X series of games feel a bit clunky to play. Is there anything else to play which fits my criteria?

dead space 3 isn't an RPG but there's a brief exploration part before the story picks up where you can explore the wreckage of a fleet
it's not in the same vein as mass effect, and its kind of bleak
i guess the outer worlds could be one? i didn't try it because i didn't like the art or the look of it

I liked everspace a lot, like the direction they are going with the sequel as well and plan to get it as soon as it leaves EA.

Right now though the number 1 space game on my radar is scam citizen, development issues aside, if you actually try it out and get a feel for what they're making I think you will easily understand why it has so many advocates despite all the negatives you hear.

I finished it once and didn't bother with the real ending. Tried playing it again some time later, but wasn't invested enough for a real game.
Still didn't beat FTL, I got to final boss maybe 2-3 times.
Space Rangers looked too overwhelming, should probably try again when I have more free time.
Didn't like Elite because most of it seemed automated and game only need destinations and occasional ship part customisation from you.
Parkan 2 looked interesting, but I gotta check it for more than 10 minutes.

StarSector is fantastic, been playing it a lot recently. As for 3d space games, I reinstalled StarConflict and that's an alright game. Certainly not for everyone but the PvP is pretty good.

I feel the same. StarSector is a 10/10 game but sometimes you just crave the 3d space.

If you want a space sandbox game look for the X games as in X3 Albion Prelude being a prime example. I'm not sure if X4 Foundations has been improved enough, one drawback of the X games is that they tend to be released with some bugs to be taken caren of

I wish there was a space game about just running one station instead of flying all over the galaxy. Beside Startopia I don't think anyone has ever done that.

I like space games but Starsector looks too much like a RTS with its combat with you having to move units all over the place which is a genre I dislike

There's a lot of good space games coming out, they're just indie and not AAA stuff

i think i donated like 30 bucks to scam citizen back in 2012. i was expecting a spiritual successor to freelancer and was genuinely excited at the prospect
and now its 2022

It wouldn't be a true Freelancer successor if it didn't have insane development problems thanks to CR

You pilot your flagship with wasd and aim with the mouse, everything else is AI controlled, Starsector combat is not RTS. Sure, you can give general orders to your fleet, designate targets that need to be focused and points to capture, but that's completely optional.

>its combat with you having to move units all over the place
Except you don't have to move any of the units, or give them any orders if you don't want to. That's the beauty of it. StarSector unironically has the best AI I've ever seen in a game. Every ship will do what it thinks is best given the situation. You can assign officers with different combat personalities and then they just fucking go. Most of the time I just pilot my flagship and don't have to worry about my fleet at all in combat.

Just look at this webm. I'm not telling my fleet to do anything. Yes you CAN give specific orders to focus fire a certain ship, but that's balanced with command points, which you have a limited amount of.

I heard Starsector doesn't exactly have much of a plot though, I kind of want something with preset quests or storylines to follow.

>i need muh marvel script!!
moviegame faggots are legit cancer

a lot of space games don't.
sins of a solar empire has all this background lore that would've made for a great singleplayer campaign but they didn't make one.
admittedly that would be a bitch of a campaign to beat cuz the games are so fucking long

Attached: sins.jpg (1280x720, 147.62K)

I don't need a marvel script, I want quests and storylines.
There's a million space sandbox games out there with no goal or story or anything. I want set goals.

well then check out freelancer if you haven't already played it it's abandonware so you can find it online pretty easily
there's a full campaign and a lot of exploration you can do between main missions, but its not a true sandbox, as you're restricted to certain areas during the story.
afterwards there isn't much to do but explore and upgrade your ship.
you can be a pirate a cop or just a mercenary, it's got a faction rating system so if you blow up too many cops you'll have to hang around pirate bases and be careful when traversing civilian space
i recommend reading ALL rumors and news cuz a lot of the lore is background text, if you can stomach that.

>hear about Underspace which is a Freelancer-style developed by a 4chin faggot
>fill it with le ebin maymays

Bro he just likes Todd memes.
People on Yea Forums can always find something to be angry about.

fuck you, shoving unfunny memes into any game is a terrible idea, it was bad when Guacamelee did it with leddit memes, it's also bad when this guy does with Yea Forums memes

The actual game's pretty memeless, he puts Todd in the development videos because it's funny and he hates people who get autistic over space.

The game isn't even out yet, and like this user is saying He probably puts them in his dev videos to trigger people like you.
And it never fails.

Dev here. There really aren’t a lot of memes in the final game. I get that weirdos freak out over anything not being 100$ serious now because being happy is bad, but it’s not like I could legally use Todd in the final product. I needed a placeholder for that quest, which is about destroying the reputation of a terrible advertising firm. Calm your panties.

You could try Rebel Galaxy. The main appeal for me was earning credits to buy bigger and bigger ships. There is a storyline.

You could use Todd, he’s a public figure.

>space game without a third axis
Into the trash it goes.

Why does this game look like it ripped the textures straight from Freelancer?

Best not to risk it.

Because it's not a Freelancer clone and you shouldn't mod Freelancer's ships (which were neatly ported from Freelancer by Why485 and can be found online) into it. Please understand.

Attached: UnderspaceOpeningContinuedNA.webm (1600x900, 1.3M)

They made a sequel with a third axis
It sucked

man, from some of the webms i've seen underspace takes that eerie factor freelancer can have and turns it up to a thousand

even as an adult i've still gotten a tinge of panic when that voice goes "DANGER: XXX DETECTED"
fuck volatile gasses
fuck sensor efficiency reduction

Don't worry, this game is far worse than Freelancer when it comes to that. Since there's actually things in the nebula this time.

Attached: UnderspaceShatteredSunsNA.webm (1600x900, 2.84M)

It wasn't bad actually, it had great ship customization. Shame they stopped the painting service.

well i hope niggerman can be my co-pilot then

I fucking love everspace, I thought i was the only one who played
Really scratches that SWBF2 (Classic) space fight itch

You'll need a lot of cats where you're going.

> thought i was the only one who played
Both it and the sequel raised like a million on kickstarter.

Kinda worried that Everspace 2 won't sell since they pushed the release date back to 2023 and Starfield releases in November.

So when does Microsoft step in to salvage something out of the project that winds up being pretty good?

It'd have to run out of money, which it won't.

I bought it for EA, I enjoy it. one of my greatest gripes is, that only the heavy ships get multiple guns so far. when asked the devs also won't include asymmetrical ships. kinda sad about that

They may have a lot of whales, but it sounds like CIG is equally as wasteful with their money.

Starsector now has a skeleton of a plot that you can follow (Galatia Academy missions) that'll last until you've effectively "won" the game, that is, your fleet is unstoppable in any practical sense. I feel the same as you, I need at least some sort of minimal story motivation to get my through a game.
#1 tip: colonize a cental-ish planet as soon as you have a million or so credits in the bank. Having a place to get unlimited fuel and supplies (even if you have to pay for them) is a godsend.

>Beside Startopia I don't think anyone has ever done that.
Someone made a shitty knockoff with no soul recently, cheeky cunts even used startopia as part of the name

I played everspace (on switch) a few months ago then paused for a while after I met some guy who recognizes me and tries to kill me. I beat him and then got wrecked somehow later.

Gib tips on how I should play to finish the game; I wasnt struggling too much but after a few jumps I always get my shit rocked

I backed Everspace 2 and played the open alpha, but I haven't touched it since. I should probably get to it now that there have been several content patches.

>has anyone tried everspace?
I did. I had fun for a few hours but it's very repetitive and the gameplay wasn't good enough to keep me coming back. That's usually where unlockables come in but in this game they're kind of garbage so there wasn't any real motivation to play after I completed a run.

Doesn't matter, they just have to do the bare minimum on their jank game

>starfield
man i almost forgot about that
that should be interesting but i doubt it'll be anything like everspace, considering it's going to be on a bethesda engine

It's a TES/Fallout style game with space elements, not a spaceship game.

Any played FTL: Multiverse?
I love the amount of content but the named characters are kind of cringe a lot of the time

Attached: Loading_bar (1).png (200x100, 16.39K)

Give tips you useless monkeys

sometimes its luck of the draw, i've only been to sector 4 or whatever in like 20 hours of play. it's not easy
you have to manage craftables and consumables, which i've NEVER been good at
on one run you could just get a bad roll and have the whole sector stacked against you

Are there any recent space games that are focused on combat?
Something like Freespace 1/2.
