Looks nice

It's $179 for a dozen or so unique little exclusive games that can only be played by the system. I'm honestly debating getting this

I got the Retroid Pocket 2 as a neat little budget handheld for emulation but this one really feels like a luxury item. If I had some extra cash to burn I would for sure buy it

Yes it's obviously a niche novelty

How is it? I was considering it for pretty much a portable Tetris machine but settled on the Miyoo Mini instead, but if I dislike it in the longrun I might look into another system

If there's something similar to this but only $80 would you buy it?

>Thoughts?
Obvious shill thread is obvious is my thought

A FUCKING CRANK!!!

Would be a fun little gimmick for $40 or so, but it costs $180. You'd have to be retarded to buy one at that price.

Post the crankjaks

>has a gimmick of weekly game releases
>can't manage to make enough units to meet initial demand whatsoever
>doesn't even use any parts that are that hard to source, sans maybe the display
What the fuck is the point in pre ordering if I have to wait ages to get it and then I miss out on the gimmick
I'm just getting a steam deck. I was really excited for the playdate top but what a fuck up not being able to even meet the niche demand there is.

Lugash Popelius is the only reason I'm interested in it.

The idea that it's a nice device for indie games is stupid. People don't mind very simple looking games on hardware that can do way more. People didn't go hey Cave Story sucked because it was 2D, no people liked it because it was something simpler looking but still great to play. Have people looked at how simple looking games can still do well? Undertale and many other indie games are doing fine on PC and consoles.

The fact this thing will need games made exclusively for it is bad, most indie devs will choose the platforms with massive userbases over this, because guess what if you made a small game targetting PC, PS4, Xbone, XSX PS5, Switch, you'll be getting way more eyeballs on it rather than the people on this, it's inherently more financially risky to develop for smaller userbases

I’ve been tempted by the RP2+ as my first entry into the handheld emulator scene, but it’s always like “ships from a China in 35 days” and people talking about it taking months.

I’ve been looking at the RG351v now, I can get it next day on Amazon and it gets good reviews, but it seems like it’s quite old by now.

>A poor, crankless pretender
If only you knew how cranked I already am ...

This shit will flop harder than Ouya

That has to be the dumbest shit ive ever seen

WHAT A HIT!

I watched the video yet I still have no idea what it is. Does it come with games? Is the screen really monochrome?

You just don't get it.

Why not just get a controller for your phone and emulate whatever games you want on a much more superior screen.

Instead of buying a 50 dollar controller these zoomers go and blow 180 on a device that only plays a handful of niche games...

This is why poverty is not a money issue.

I love LGR but he deserves this.

>gaming on my phone
No thanks

Based
I have the same controller too

Nah, man. I got the better indie handheld right here.

I still can't believe that the crank can't be used to charge the thing

Low volume plastic production has been fucked lately. Keycap sets lead time has gone from some months to over a year.

The crank does not charge the battery, 0/10

You'd have to spin 2 million times to charge

Concept always felt a bit hipster to me. A crank of all things and having a black-and-white screen (And from what I recall, it's literally black-and-white, as in, no greyscale), I have no idea how this thing blew up in some indie circles.

It reminds me of that Robot Chicken skit about that imagination toy

And then there is the pricetag, which is barely $20 under the price of a Switch Lite.

>>And then there is the pricetag, which is barely $20 under the price of a Switch Lite.
This. This is the only thing holding me back. If it was like 80 dollars I would buy

Another gizmo that you'll play with for thirty minutes, put in a drawer and forget about once you've gotten enough upvotes on r/edc.

Every single fucking time some tech assholes crowdfund yet another 'indie game console' instead of leveraging the fact that phones exist, everyone has one and are an untapped market for indie titles.

Couldn't you just increase the resistance on it to generate power faster?

The phone game market is oversaturated because of freemium gambling games. Also the massive profits those gambling games make means that you will never have the marketing budget necessary to effectively reach your target audience.

I could tell just by looking at this that it was made in either Seattle or Portland. Looked it up afterwards, it's Portland. Those two cities have such a specific strain of hipsterism. I'd love to see them nuked.

Not effectively at the size it is. The design doesn't allow for it; ever notice how the crank powered devices out there all have big ass cranks?

>I get angry at things that don't concern me

Stop chasing weird kids out of small towns and pushing them to those places then

the crank...

it's stupid

Nobody chases the faggots. They move to these cities of their own accord because they view them as their Mecca. They think they're too good to stay in their small towns with their families and friends.

Blatant shill thread.

You really should hate the cities desu, a lot of the people whose families lived there for generations are normal like the small town people. They have just been drowned out by the annoying transplants.

>he thinks reality doesn't concern him

>brought one
>came with a defective right trigger
i was actually miserable for a week since i really enjoyed messing around with it until i realised

I know. I live in a city that is being flooded with Brooklynites and all the neighbors and mom & pop stores are being forced out by hipsters and their Whole Foods.

>preemptive backpedaling for when their LLC files for chapter 11
Dohoho

Accept them more, we're tired of dealing with them. Also I grew up in a small town. No one has built a new building, opened a new store, or done anything but seethe at the blue island in my state since I was like 10. There is still a burned out husk of a building no one has bothered to demolish. 70% of my graduating class went to the same shitty community college a few miles down the road and then they got service jobs. Ever consider that they flee because there's no opportunity?

They make other things too. Some have been on the market for years.

How's the tooling for the platform? Can you make your own games?

>No backlight for a handheld console in 2022
>But the screen is very reflective
What a peculiar idea

Phones are really shit for most vidya

>some hipsters jerking each other off a thousand miles away affects me

Attached: mmmmmmhh.png (583x777, 620.93K)

It uses Sharp memory display, which is meant to be lit externally and does look quite nice.

Blatant troll reply.

There's two big problems preventing phones from being decent in gaming:

1. They have become an utter cesspool of pay-to-win gacha crapware. Sadly, while these are the shittiest of games out there to make even things like Sonic 2006 look like a masterpiece, they generate mad amounts of money, more than most console and PC games. And because of this, the appstores have become flooded with these with everyone hoping to become the next big fad that generates billions.

2. Touchscreen-only controls. I remember when smartphones used to have physical controls. Before Apple came and shit all over the phone market, smartphones used to have foldout keyboards as standard as well as a d-pad and several physical buttons. Even after Apple came with their iCrap the earlier Android phones all had fold-out keyboards.... but now everyone is obsessed with thinner. Thinner. THINNER THINNER THINNER! Headphone jack in the way? Axe it! Thinner! Battery compartment in the way! Glue it in! Thinner! MicroSD slot increasing thickness by 0.001mm? Remove it! Thinner! Fold-out controls take space, can't have that if you want to create a phone that nobody asked for to be thin enough to give you papercuts. Sony tried in the area of touch-only phones to have a phone with a dualkshock-like foldout controller.... it flopped.

So almost all phone games these days are pay-to-win gacha crap designed to be played exclusively with a touchscreen. THAT is why gaming on phones is shit. I remember the smartphones I had before Apple and microtransactions took over. Phones with actual physical controls, and loaded with games that while not free, were ACTUAL games. Many of those games I bought back then, despite not having any online features, no longer work because they were depreciated in favor of gacha crap.

Imagine an undertale wannabe

play.date/dev/

tons of indie games get ported to phones already, the problem is that the lack of buttons is always a deterrent to multiplat indies, which is a more lucrative deal than focusing exclusively on mobile

not exactly. if this console has 30 games and you make a game for it, probably nearly everyone with one will play it. if you make a game for the pc or ps4, it will be swept away in an extremely oversaturated market

This, it's similar to the Arduboy

same

not to mention, theyre making these phones ultra thin only for advertising. when people buy them, EVERYONE has to get a case which triples the size of the phone

Even a niche game on the other platforms, by attracting a small percentage of the userbases involved, that's still hundreds of thousands of consumers. Will this device even attract a hundred thousand consumers total? Then you have to have 100% attachment rate to match developing a multiplat for the other platforms.

Designing and selling a game is still a business, and the risk of making games for a new small platform is much smaller, and the entire notion that you need a weak device to be a sweet home to indies is just blatantly false and at odds with how lots of indie games find success on powerful devices.

Phones aren't thin anymore though they have been getting thicker over years. That meme died ages ago.

>Here's a unique device that plays unique games

>HUR DUR WHY NOT EMULATE

anyone who scams thousands of manchildren into donating money to kickstart something that is never worth the investment is based imo

>EVERYTHING HAS TO SELL MILLIONS OF COPIES ALL THE TIME OR IT'S A FAILURE

Your brain has been rotted by Triple-A games and advertising.

Sometimes, you can make a thing because you want to, and sell it to people who think it's cool, and that's enough.

It was never a kickstarter, lol

Celeste started out as a game on a virtual handheld much like this user

heh you can say that again....

Producing indie games is still a business. Not enough sales, no money, your company goes belly up, which means the 3rd party support of any new device/platform can be a tough thing given the risks involved. You are drinking the koolaid from those hipsters, are the guys making games just giving them away due to the goodness of their hearts? Come back to planet earth
