I figured I'd have to have go with one of them to find the serum to cure the other one and my entire time knowing Mia all she'd done is be secretive, crazy, cut my hand off and constantly tried to kill me. There really should have been a prologue that gave you some reason to care about Mia other than she's your wife that disappeared for three years. She feels like a complete stranger. She could have at least helped you to some degree throughout the game or maybe had a part where she helped you and you bonded. As the player Zoe feels way more familiar.

The content is virtually exactly the same except for a worse ending. It's not even compelling enough to go back and replay to do the "right" choice. It's pointless to put it in there. It feels like they had to cut something out. It should be a path A, path B choice that actually gives you something different and ideally a compelling reason to go back and try the other option.

There's no way to know anything about any control. You just know about an infection that turns people into violent mutants, except for Zoe for some reason. Mia comes off like she's in cahoots with the family whereas Zoe seems like she actually wants to get away.

It honestly is a really great game. In retrospect this choice is the only thing I don't like about it and knowing that they did this just because something was popular in other games explains a lot and why it feels so tacked on.
They should have at least given some consequence and bearing on the choice though if they were going to put it there. Different final area for either choice would have been great.

Basically, every single logical and ethical argument says you save Zoe because Zoe deserves to live the most. On the other hand, here is the full and complete list of reasons to save your "wife":

- The game tells you she's your "wife" and you're supposed to care for some reason
- You get the bad ending if you don't (for nonsensical and arbitrary reasons)
