Its a role you get after you have a lot of experience. its like applying to be a manager at a factory when you have never worked at one.

If you have pixel art in your resume is not going to be a deciding factor(unless its a indie pixel art game) for a "game designer" or a "game lead" role.

If you are displaying art in your portfolio its because you are applying for a art position. If you want a programming role you show the projects that you have completed. If you are a game designer you show the games you have made.

The mans statement is like me applying for a programming position and only showing my sculpting abilities like yeah no shit you won't get the job.

This reminds me of my days on PixelJoint where literally every single member had a "game they were working on" that never advanced further than mockup screenshots that looked exactly like this with this exact same artstyle and palette. I really hate that pixel artist crowd in hindsight, they reminded me a lot of metal elitists. Some of them were always shitting on games like Metal Slug and Street Fighter III for "cheating" and not being Real Pixel Art™, it was insufferable.

The "indieshit" look is being as minimalist as possible. OP's is the opposite, and only looks otherwise because Mario already has an established aesthetic by this point.

SFIII uses a lot of rotoscoping, while Metal Slug's bosses are usually disjointed puppets. I don't think I'd call them cheating, but compared with hand drawn animation, both techniques really give themselves away and can look at odds with the rest of the game.

To pixel art elitists, anything other than sitting there manually placing every single opaque pixel one at a time is cheating, even if it's a means to an end for the same results. Rotoscoping or tracing non-pixel art or animations is cheating (pic related was the first step in making SF3 sprites). Temporary alpha channels as a stopgap to figure out palettes, layering, and placement is cheating. Rotating and editing copied and pasted pieces is cheating. Like any community, there's always going to be some annoying cult cool kids club that has to posture over how much more hardcore they are than everyone else.
