It was inoffensively generic and had Sonic in it, that's all Sonic fans wanted. It didn't even try to cram gays and groids into it as far as I remember which means it's instantly better than 95% of movies that come out.

It was a hit with non-fans exactly because it was a generic "CG animal gets dropped into the real world and bonds with a human character" movie. I didn't like it, but now that the sequel is out I see the first one as a necessary evil to get to the good stuff.

First movie was simply not terrible which was shocking for a cgi popular cartoon in the real world film. 2nd movie manages to actually be a sonic movie despite Hollywood which is again shocking to finally see. Fat black gorilla intermission aside it had a lot of good parts and overall worked.

robotnik is a very specific type of nuts, carrey doing his textbook zany wacko and vomiting out extremely long and overwritten sentences is not like eggman at all
he doesn't even look like eggman until the post credit stinger and none of his gadgets look accurate to his game stuff either

This guy has never seen any of the Sonic shows.
Robotnik is always ramped up in crazy when he's not in the games.

I was fine when the two women played around with Tails' gadget, until they separated and the entire scene shifted into the black woman chasing the man with the car. That part sat wrong to me. Other than that, I had fun with the movie.

Then yeah, Eggman wasn't game-accurate and was only broadly based on the character. Though I can accept it as an origin story of sorts where he becomes more accurate once he meets and battles Sonic.
