what would your ideal city building game look like? what kind of elements of building/running a city would it focus on?

Cities Skylines, except it doesn't look like complete soulless dogvomit
aw c'mon
Has to be some autism-sim made by a solo-developer over 20 years, preferably with unreal engine, so it looks immaculate even in a few decades. In the vein of dwarf fortress, but focusing on municipal planning and trade.
it's been out for years now but still in EA though
huge fan, games like this are why I'm glad EA exists
>soulless clean-corporate-postmodern architectural style
>lighting & shaders that are actually painful to look at
>everything that isn't a building is just flat empty grass
>shit ost
everything about the presentation of C:S - even the fucking name - is AWFUL.
Is this actually good city design, for anyone that knows about urban planning?
text based
>just put buildings everywhere bro
retard
sim city 4
You don't put elevated freeways over the top of your affluent suburbs. You certainly don't put an offramp that goes straight into the middle of the suburbs unless you're trying to get people run over all the time. he should have left it that the only way in and out is via the arterial.
No. Cities should have more green space, tree lined streets, easy access, and buildings never exceeding more than four-five floors, except for major landmarks. We have been so browbeaten by shitty inhuman modern urban design for so long that we actually think it's the natural way of things.
It looks like a crusty, infected scab. Humans are a disease.
Is it really that far away from mt Fuji?
If you want sprawl check out NewCity. Cities get real big
Maybe not ideal game. But I would like to see one with more abstract graphics for performance. Let it look like some GIS map or whatever.
Let construction actually take time and show me the horrors of remodeling decades later.
Make road and lane tools that actually with work properly out of the box.
you have no idea how comfy an organically grown city is. roads laid out not in a grid but in wacky curves and angles that go around hills and such. it's so much more interesting and fun to walk around than a disgusting grid hell like nyc.
pic related. just a random fucking staircase in the middle of a neighborhood.
Enjoy slipping and dying on those mossy stairs retard
you wish your stairs were covered in moss and not just garbage like they are.
>no parking lots
>no 16 lane highways
How the fuck do people get around?
Trains, lots of fucking trains
based, not only is the construction and industries the best out of all city-builders, but you can also build really comfy small towns with kino train servicing
To be honest I don't really like city building games, the scale is too big for my liking. Is there village building games?
The mechanic where you have to find the right balance between knowing and researching enough about the approaching Great Ones to attempt to have the populace counteract them, without delving so far into it that it gives your cultist academics enough influence to start an uprising in the name of astral ascension.
That’s for the homeless and “minorities” to get around.
The game starts pre industrial revolution. Time progresses, and changes transportation and what industries are successful. The city would develop organically and not artificially.
Also a bigger focus on the economy and trade.
Everyone in japan uses trains
A miles-long scifi spaceport builder would be cool
bike fag dream reality
Sprawl, Japan
As much as I like how fun it is to manage traffic CS really doesn't get enough shit for how butt ugly it is. Simcity 3000 looks better for gods sake.

>When a trailer from 2003 has better design direction
Cities Skylines, except it runs well on my machine
Looks like Sydney Australia desu
Parking is done in buildings instead of out in the open. Japan is way smaller than America after all.

vid was in 1995
I want something like Sim City 4's building styles mode in Cities:Skylines, or really for the game to just have better looking architecture in general. All the stock buildings and assets look ugly and cartoonish with garish colors, and hideous signs and billboards plastered everywhere, with a lack of any historical styles and building types.
Just give me more control to fine-tune the aesthetics without having to download tons of mods.
imagine the smell
i honestly always felt like C:S had incredibly ugly outdated graphics, dogshit lighting and yet somehow still has the worst fucking performance.
its already really showing its age, and it was ugly on release too
>roads laid out not in a grid but in wacky curves and angles
grids were abandoned decades ago because they're fucking awful for traffic
t.best friend is a civil engineer, everyone else i know works in construction or is a tradie
Stock buildings in most cities are ugly greyish steel and glass blocks
soulless dogvomit
Banished
Kek true. But even a place like London is full of centuries of unique and interesting buildings.
Idk I think a lot of C:S's weird building design choices come from the team being a bunch of autistic Finns. Kek
>City builders will never let you repurpose old buildings
How can we get a dev to just let us reuse old factories and such as housing or commercial areas?
God I wish American cities werent literally designed for cars, it's so unsustainable and it's becoming exponentially unbearable in the last few years. Having shitty public transportation in large cities is really retarded. I'd rather be in sardines inside trains for 15 minutes rather than an hour every day getting spent in traffic wasting $20 dollars in gas. Not only is the traffic and cost a pain to deal with on the daily but the footprint on cities is so fucking massive. This is a random section of the city I live in, more than half the space is meant for cars. It's all fucking ridiculous
Any builders for that feel of neverending parking lots? I can't think of any
Well said, user. Grids really are shit.
Fuck that picture makes me want to play Cities Skylines again.
I'm terrible at that game. But I will try it.
Sim city does use the US style zoning so that's pretty close. You could probably zone low density commercial everywhere and see parking lots show up
It probably takes too much effort to code that kind of shit into the game
grids are fine, they make buses and trams efficient and easy as fuck to follow. you can also have sections dedicated only for pedestrian and bike traffic. you just need some roundabouts in busy crossings to prevent gridlock. what's bad is grids designed specifically for cars. that's how you get 50% of city land being dedicated to parking lots to accommodate for an increased usage in cars, which does jackshit since there's still not enough space for all cars since everyone and their dog wants to be alone in their own vehicle on the ride to work. It would be a lot more tolerable if people learned how to carpool and let their convenience go down a bit by sharing a ride for 10 minutes.
Barcelona also have lots of grids but they made the inner areas blocked off to cars so they have to go around those clusters.
We could have had less of a need for cars and better public transit, but as car companies got bigger and bigger, they bought out public transit companies and either ran them into the ground or dissolved them completely, which forced more people to buy cars.
I like autistic simulator stuff. We just need that one guy with his janky lifetime project
if you want me to start using public transport then there better not be homeless and nigs on it. Im not gonna get stuck sitting beside scum of the earth shitters or listen to some retard blaring music just so some faggot like you can feel better about the environment
Train and metros, only richfags can actually afford buying a car and a parking spot. That's the daily life of your average japanese man
>Bankers Hill
I feel you user. When I worked a few blocks from your pic I took the trolley from Chula Vista because FUCK driving through that
it isnt about the environment, it's about how fucking untolerable traffic is because your average American has to drive alone to everywhere at the same time. Cities are unsustainable without proper public transport, especially when you have the majority of people commuting from their suburbs an hour away. everyone is using the roads because even those who live near the city has no choice because buses run every hour and are often late or shitly maintained. The only big American cities ive found to be tolerable for transportation is Chicago and SF, and even then it's still shit compared to big cities abroad. all im saying is if you dont want to sit next to hobos and nigs when cities inevitably turn to PT because of being unsustainable then dont fucking work in the city
public transport
Holy sovl
>everyone ranting about minorities and the homeless on public transport
>worst I've every experienced is just some drunk guy talking to me
the only problem I have with public transport is that it's not frequent enough
Someone photoshop joker
Townsmen
