I prefer the smaller levels of DS. Some of the levels in 2 are way too big. And DS has the best atmosphere by far. They leaned into the horror aspects more and it's kino.

DS has potential but it also has a lot of glaring issues. Namely:
-The HUB is cool at first but becomes annoying very quickly.
-Game has like 9 levels in total and they're tiny.
-Looks very samey from beginning to end. Blue ambient light with orange torches. Same medieval interiors.
-Sunken Citadel is the worst level in the series bar none.
I prefer 2 over 1.

Half of levels are super natural garbage which means you just walk around big, boring levels and avoid dumb zombies until you stumble upon epic magical thing™ and then proceed to the next level, theres like only 2 good moments in these level, 1 in cathedral that unlocks after you collect 4 keys and the other one is side objective on some level where you need to steal something and house is guarded by 2 skeleton retards so you have to carefully sneak around and turn the lights off.
And the other half is just very okay, sometimes boring, and easy stealth game since you can easily run up to guard from behind and knock him out most of the time (deus ex did it better since no matter what they always turn around when you run up to them and you can't whack them wherever you want, you had to hit them in a specific spot)

Thief 1 has some real low lows but strong highs. Its much more of a mixed bag than 2. I might have enjoyed 1 more if my first run wasn't on Expert which requires you to endure the bad for even longer, though you can skip every level in the game.
Ignoring Gold, 2 has way lower lows than the first game does. Kidnapped and the last two mansion missions were horrible, easily worse than the worst mission in 1.
2 sucks ass, after two levels I couldn’t wait to finish it, the aesthetic and atmosphere were very different in a bad way, the robots were dumb and droopy dog as the main villain was the stupidest idea

I think both Thief 1 and Thief 2 are great games, but I like the former a little more for the story and especially the atmosphere.

Why is Thief upheld as this paragon of stealth AI when the guards are equally as dumb as in every other stealth game? In fact, I tried playing Thief 2 and felt underwhelmed because the shadows and sound manipulation made it easy to just blackjack guards and hide the bodies.
Too bad grave robbing sucks ass and is completely unfun, as I said before, shit like its muh fantasy doesn't make it anymore fun, they at least coudve place tougher enemies in tombs

Guard talk a lot and sound design is good, but AI isn't good, yes

The non-burglar levels would probably grow on me if they were more dungeon-like, but aside from Bonehoard they were just annoying.
