ITT: Games that jumped the shark

Post the first game that ruined everything going forward in a franchise.

Brownie points for mentioning the game that revived the series afterwards.

3 was not as bad as everybody made it out to be. Black Flag was the game that jumped the shark to ruin it.

i beg to differ, the gimped combat, the gimped stealth (cant kill within 8 meters of another guard before you get alerted), the replacement of health squares with regenerating health, lack of midair control for the parkour especially after it got mastered in revelations, this is all putting aside the shitty story and all its problems

Honestly I thought it was one of the worst games I've ever played. It ruined the entire series for me, having been a huge fan of every game before 3.

Cod advanced warfare

I work at Ubisoft Montreal. In my office space there is a huge ass poster from the Brotherhood days. Every day I pass in front of it and it reminds me of what we've lost.

Damn that's sad. The series had so much potential until Revelations then it just turned into cookie-cutter cash grabs like CoD

Worst part is that there is no incentive for us to stop doing what we are doing. Valhalla made 1 Billion dollars in revenue, why would we do anything else?

i dont understand how you could think this. they fucked with the combat in 3 and black flag added the naval combat, even if black flag is the reason AC eventually became something else its still a much better game than 3.

Resident Evil 4
Bloodborne
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

desire to actually make something you're proud of instead of another bland corporate pile of sludge that makes money?

major game developers don't care about that they just want to make whatever sells. mass appeal to retards usually works best

Do you really think this can exist with a publically traded company?

so you're saying we need to abolish the stock market

abolishing the stock market does not imply abolishing private ownership of companies. It in fact implies the opposite.

Cringe + You're 40

I know 3 gets a lot of shit for its long prologue and bland MC, but I remember being so amazed that they actually went and tried to make an actual sequel. The Ezio games kind of overstayed their welcome, and 3 revamped combat, parkour, animations, graphics, added animals, resource collecting and crafting, winter and fucking boat sections out of nowhere that nobody asked for but were a pleasant surprise. I remember looking at the cutscenes and being amazed at the huge leap in animation quality and the level of detail on the character's faces. This felt like an actual new assassin's creed.

Then came IV and a lot of the things that I mentioned were thrown out the window. Faces looked cartoonish again, the only weapon you could equip were the dual swords, hunting was reduced to just shooting the single animal habiting each island, the shortest main story since revelations, etc. The one thing it did well it did so extremely well, but I couldn't shake the feeling the series was returning to a yearly low effort asset flip

You realise that ubisoft is a publisher right. Long gone are the days where making a good game is a goal. Money is the aim now (especially when the average consumer is just a cow being milked every year).
How's the NFT situation at ubi btw ? It felt that they were so eager to get on the trend. Surely some voices were raised against it no ?
Oh and btw i sincerly hope that it's not the same studio that will make the followup to the creative disaster that was breakpoint.

>How's the NFT situation at ubi btw
It was a complete shit show and you have no idea how hard everyone hated it. We have an internal "Facebook" and it was completely on fire. Quebecers are well known for speaking the truth, and the whole thing is still shat on to this day. That's the worst thing almost, a tiny group wanted to do it, but that was powerful people. Every one else hated it.
Some cool games are coming, I am looking forward to the future and you should to. For the ghost recon brand I don't think we have anything besides Frontline tho.

>Ubisoft
>cool games
>ever

Ezio design in Brotherhood is what peak aesthetics looks like

If isn't a new Rayman game don't bother replying me

Cheers to better games in the future! Even though i had letdowns on some occasions in the past there are still many games from ubisoft that i remember fondly. Anno 1800 is one of the recent games that give me hope for the future of the whole medium.

You don't want a Rayman game without Michel Ancel user

Do you know anything about a Fenyx sequel?
New mythology like the China DLC or continuation of main game?

honestly don't. I'm surprised so many people liked this game. It was mostly made while working from home too.

Do you like Revelations?

How can I not when this thing exist?

It's a weird comparison but it brought me back to PS1 Tomb Raider days, exploration and puzzles with a bare-bones story but a charming MC.
Only thing coming out of Ubi that I'm looking forward to.

>background characters are the multiplayer characters
holy kino

Thief best girl.

Revelations is my favorite AC right after the very first one. I spent way too much time just walking around in Constantinople letting the absolute S O U L of the world design soak in.

I'm glad you enjoyed it user, the team in Quebec poured love into it. Maybe because it was a smaller project is what made it so it still has some soul left in it.

The lead writer wanted to recreate the events of Genesis by destroying the world and making the protag use the apple to control an alien ship and fuck off to another planet. Sequels would've been the protag using an alien Animus to relive past human lives so the protag and his gf can survive in the new world. EA called it fucking retarded, fired him, killed off Desmond and made the kino that is Black Flag a reality.

This, 3 wasn't the game that ruined the franchise. It was Revelations and Black Flag, especially the latter with the PIV Abstergo shit.

Back this up with sources, none of this was teased in the first 3 games

Only thing that bought it down is the cosmetic store pay-walling all the cool outfits.
Is it a rule a Ubi game has to have one even if it's a completely single player game?

I think if Odyssey and Valhalla weren't AC games and were just their own IP, people would like them better. The games themselves aren't bad, they're comfy to explore and fight in.

That has got to be one of the best trailer/animation that i had seen up until that time for a video game (granted i had not seen many of them). To me these repersent a small golden age in the video game industry (mostly because i was younger at that time). Plus it also made me discover Woodkid.

Black flag was the best entry in the whole franchise and it's not even close.

Yes, yes it is, because it works sadly.

Yes it fucking was dipshit. The apple of eden, the alien flashback scenes, the temple being a spaceship, it's all there. Play the games next time before you talk about them.

fpwp

So how pozzed is that new AC game supposed to be? Or is it seriously an online open world AC game?

Got a friend who works for Ubisoft Quebec and they're sick of AC lol

Why are the devs at Ubisoft so determined to push Kassandra and female Eivor as the canon MCs when barely anyone played the females as well as all the marketing being on the males?

Attached: 1643834458137.gif (288x377, 1.83M)

Next AC game is that Basim one that was meant to be Valhalla DLC. They said it's going to be more like the old games.
Infinity is supposed to be their next "major" game and is supposed to be a GaaS thing with countries being new updates or something. You can already tell how they're probably going to do it based on Odyssey and Valhalla, particularly Valhalla.

I don't want to talk about that, but Inifinity won't be the cancer you think it will be. Have hope.

I'm not a game dev or an artist but holy fuck it must suck for both, artists designing heaps of cool armor and weapons for them to be locked in the store, and devs having to actually implement the store.

Yeah and they are making Inifinity now, so they will be eating and sleeping AC for a while I think.

PR and good boy points. It doesn';t matter really. And to be fair, while I hated it at first, I think it's actually great that you can switch gender at any time during the game. I think we were the first to do it, and now look at games like Elden Ring. Being able to change how you look on the fly is kinda cool.

Black Flag was a good game but it ruined the AC franchise.
>Did proper ship combat that then had to be shoehorned into every fucking game
>First AC game to have very little to do with the Assassin's
>Nameless, faceless and boring modern day protag which they used for the next few games
It was the beginning of the end in terms of making interesting games about the Assassin's vs Templars

Playing both sides I'd imagine, appeal to the majority player base by having male option and marketing the male option, but woke points saying female is canon.

You are full of shit then
The first 3 games set up Desmond training him to find the apples with the sub plot of subject 16 that fallen out of the story

It's not as much work as you think it is. Charcters have skeletons, you design armors based on the skeletons and they will implement seemlessly, like skins on CSGO guns. Now I don't know this at all right, but having a LOT of skin designs also means you can give some to do to less experienced people to train them (good for them) or offload it to smaller studios in other countries.

It's also funny to think that like Elder Scrolls and Creation Engine, Assassin's Creed (and many other games at Ubisoft) still run on Anvil to this day (Engine created for the first game).

Based

better larp next time

What's Basim? What's GaaS?

Not so much the actual work, more the knowing the work is going to be in a store people universally loathe and ridicule.

It was years after release that I learned that hating 3 was the cool thing to do. When it first game out absolutely no one I knew who had played the previous games in the series disliked it aside from the prologue being so long. People who sperged out over the supposed "bait and switch" were just autists. It's not an amazing game by any means, but it's akin to people hating X only once X is no longer cool and then pretending they always hated X.

Didn't they say that they had a new engine for the 3 or was it me just falling for the bullshit marketing of that time?

For Honor was alright.

"Anvil Next" TM is just Anvil lol

What the issue with that statement?

Elden ring

>What's Basim?
Character from Valhalla. Main character of modern day going forward.
>What's GaaS?
Games as a Service. Means they do a bunch of FOMO-esque events so you're constantly playing, have a bunch of microtransactions, and build a game around those microtransactions to fund future content that comes out for free. Typically has a ridiculous amount of grind to do anything, especially if it has RPG mechanics. Warframe, Marvel's Avengers, and Destiny are examples of a GaaS model. Most F2P MMOs are too.

Metroid games after Zero Mission

>Main character of modern day going forward.
Layla is gone? Thank God, I hated her.
>GaaS
So essentially the next AC is a giant MMO like game utilizing AC gameplay and such?

Valhalla is already a GaaS

This, hell Rouge is a better le ship game too. Has less of the garbage padding.

>Layla is gone? Thank God, I hated her.
She's in the grey with Desmond, like Cray.
