The idea of the land (people) prospering only started to take fruition in the 17th century, and it didn't actually start to manifest until the revolutionary wars of the 18th century. Before that, everyone was considered subjects and barely worth more than the land they occupied.
The idea of good men becoming kings has been a fantasy since the time of Plato. But a good man is antithetical to a king. Good men lead to nationalism, and that flies in the face of the intentions of royalty.
Nothing he said was wrong. It's ok to write a fairytail fantasy like Tolkien did but if you want to write about kingdom ruling this take is absolutely the right direction.
