the whole point of it not being in Leyndell anymore is that they don't want the literal homebase of the guys who are trying to kill demigods to be right beside a demigod

They abused their position close to Marika to avoid scrutiny. (Gowdwyn was the FIRST to die, but there are 7 dead damigods in the walking Mausoleums who are all soulless like him). But they were outed and the Black Knives were chased from the Capital and their invisibility cloaks destroyed in the process. Some of the Black Knives also went off to try and go after Malenia/Miquella, but the way to the Haligtree is sealed and they can't proceed. Instead wandering around town with their Invisibility Cloaks still intact while Archers, oblivious to their presence, provide sentry from the rooftops.

Marika flipped her shit at this betrayal on every level. She was trying to create a utopia free of Death and the world was seemingly betraying her. So she destroyed the Elden Ring to send the world into a spiral of turmoil and suffering. For this heresy against the GW the Elden Beast crucified and impaled her. (Elden Beast grab-attack).
