It is a 1v1 game. There's no assist or tag mechanics, and the only difference between the 1st character you play and the others are that you get 1 more meter bar for the following characters

Because the story is structured around teams and it's fun to see how the team arrangements change from game to game.
Because that way it has three times as many characters as other games.
Because it's the series' entire gimmick and without it it'd just have made people in the 90s play street fighter instead, there's a reason neither AoF or Fatal Fury were ever as popular as KoF.

It's still up in the air. He seems to be popular enough not to be wasted AND unlike K9999, SNK isn't pretending he doesn't exist anymore since Krohnen's reveal. He even got his own event right around the time Krohnen was revealed that did pretty well, so he's got a fair chance to come back one day.

There's not much reason why they couldn't coexist, they're pretty different in terms of personality, appearance, and moveset. All SNK has to do is slightly twink Nameless' backstory by erasing the part him being the 9,999 Kyo clone

He's the 9999th K' clone though. He's like Krizalid in that he's a clone of K' who already had Kyo's genetics grafted onto him but for the Zhe Project they injected them with even more of Kyo's genome down the line which is why his flames are so fucking strong. Also I if they do bring him to a canon game I hope they give him a more fleshed out version of his Boss Syndrome moveset.
