Boss design, length, and structure. It's basically perfectly designed as a 40 minute adrenaline rush action gauntlet. It's a very compact game, there's no downtime whatsoever besides some short cutscenes, and it's extremely replayable. Learning the patterns and when to dash/counter-force is satisfying, the game is almost as much about knowledge as it is execution.

If realism gets in the way of gameplay then it's a problem. It also led to this shit genre of movie-like games like PS4-PS5 flagship exclusives (TLOU2, GoW) that are chock-full of cinematics with uninteresting gameplay.

I've played tons more (especially flash games) but my poorfag ass couldn't run fancier games for many years, and about 15-20 of the fancy games I played were on a second-hand 360 with many of them pre-installed. I finished GTA 5 and Saints Row 4 by looking down most of the time to minimize the graphic rendering. I really should try fitting Rome: Total War and Age of Mythology there
