He essentially destroyed the Archie comic line of Sonic comic because one day he decided to copyright his characters as well as several others he had nothing to do with under the noses of both Sega and Archie. This caused Archie to sue since of course this shouldn't have happened since they own the characters.
In court however they couldn't produce the original contract due to it being lost in a fire but they had a copy, now, penders being the weasel he is cast doubt on it claiming that he never signed a contract casting doubt on it and despite the fact that ownership of the characters should have reverted to Archie somehow he was allowed to keep them essentially winning the case.
That caused another writer to take Mammoth Mogul in a similar case.
Both cases led to the reboot of the comic and then Sega moving to IDW because they saw Archie as incompetent.

He also tried to sue Sega and bioware for infringement relating to Sonic Chronicles twice because it was about echidnas. It was thrown out on both occasions yet he considers that a win and constantly claims that he owns the characters in Chronicles, especially shade.
