Japanese Culture, while closely interwoven with other asian cultures, is somehow the only one that has managed to also become close to (old) western cultures. Their honor thinking for example closely resembles old roman thoughts about honour. Hell, they even have some kinds of polytheism while the other asian nation all embraced either buddism, Confuzianism or (through communism) atheism.
In short they are the only asian nation that is a bit like the western ones, but people dont realize their love for japan is not because its foreign, but because it is culturally and in values closer to the (old) western values than to the eastern ones.
Also its the only asian culture that managed to successfully transistion into a post medieval society. All the other ones are constantly struggling with that.

I think it's more that gamers are unironically mind broken by awful translations at this point that they assume "Look at the intent of the work and try to translate without being implicitly restricted by the exact meanings and syntax" means "Add funny Fortnite and among us references to the translation". If I remember correctly there's this translation of the Oddessy that rather than trying to be the most accurate attempts to translate it in a way that would be evocative of how story was passed down through oral tradition which very much has the same thought process as the OP image.
I'm pretty deep into learning this language and there is definitely a kernel of truth in the gaming translator narrative of having to identify the meaning of something and basically rewrite it in order to get a natural sounding english translation. people who translate japanese literature are doing the same thing. the difference comes down to the personalities, egos, grasp of the language and actual writing ability. which, if you're slaving away translating budget jrpgs all day, are doing to be low, because if you were actually good at that stuff you wouldn't be working that shit job in the first place. it really just comes down to bad writers, and it doesn't help that they've all collectively formed a massive chip on their shoulders from being ridiculed so much
