>get told from people for years that this game is incredibly edgy and for angsty teenagers >finally decide to play it after many years to see what the fuzz is about >the game is not actually all that edgy and is in fact really light hearted and funny most of the time
Where did the whole "Final Fantasy VII is edgy" meme come from? Most of the time this game doesn't seem to take itself seriously at all.
All of the sequels and extend universe bullshit take the story in a completely different direction with lots of edginess..
Ironically enough, Remake is probably the closest to the tone of the original but it's still got tons of chuuni edge shit stuffed in.
Charles Diaz
Advent Children
Thomas Rodriguez
No idea
Tyler Nelson
That could stem from the fact that SE keeps portraying Cloud and Sephiroth as edgelords whenever they make cameos in other games.
IE Kingdom Hearts
Joseph Cook
It just has a sinister atmosphere. Most of the time you're at abandoned places, destroyed/poor villages or dark caves but the characters themselves just try to make the best out of each situation
Brody Clark
>get told from people for years that this game is incredibly edgy and for angsty teenagers This is all from the stuff released after FF7, especially advent children
Juan Perry
Back when it came out, topics like raging against the corporate machine, saving the planet from militant oppressors, and having a token black friend were considered edgy behavior. Now making of all that shit is edgy.
Joseph Bell
>Where did the whole "Final Fantasy VII is edgy" meme come from? Tetsuya Nomura. He got control and turned it into a fujo-fanfest of "le emotional men in black leather fighting each other"
Isaiah Butler
So I should just ignore everything related to Final Fantasy VII aside from the main game?
Benjamin Williams
Pretty much
Ian Hernandez
yeah, it's all shit.
Aiden James
Because it is you fucking retard. Like seriously, what part of FF7 is lighthearted when for the most part this is a very depressive game? The mini-games?
Carson Gutierrez
Abso-fucking-lutely
John Robinson
nigger
Ryan Watson
We just met Hojo chilling at the beach, the same Hojo that tried to get Red XIII to rape Areis, the same Hojo that mysteriously disappeared from Shinra with no trace, and he's just at the beach getting a suntan with his fucking lab coat on and none of the characters are really all that bothered by it. This game is goofy as fuck.
You remember wrong, its ff VIII that was the edgy one
Jayden Wright
Yes I'm actually jealous that you get to never see any of it
Blake Allen
You're allowed to have an overall serious narrative with comedic moments and dialogue, user. Even them just climbing the Shinra building during a serious rescue mission was filled with funny moments. Cloud's personality was completely changed after 7.
Many fans of 7 and by fans I mean secondaries who've only seen characters as cameos remember the game being serious and edgy for whatever reason.
Jason Barnes
Pretty much. Remake is pretty good though.
Benjamin Davis
>and he's just at the beach getting a suntan with his fucking lab coat on and none of the characters are really all that bothered by it It bothered me. This is the game praised and extolled by multitudes for decades? I was quite unimpressed.
Anthony Smith
I dunno, even VIII isn’t as edgy as they make VII out to be
As someone who grew up during the PS1 days but didn't play FFVII I'm pretty impressed with what it was for the time. The character models where ugly, even back then, but the way it merges FMVs with gameplay is really impressive and it makes the game feel a lot more cinematic than it's contemporaries. I think that's one of the reasons why it caught on back in the day.
Dominic Martin
Probably because Cloud was a lot more broody in Kingdom Hearts, and he became depressed in Advent Children. That, and he kept being drawn in official artwork as looking depressed for some reason. This kinda tainted Cloud's image in the decades following VII.
Yes. That's also for every other ol der FF out there. Ignore all the sequels for FFIV, VII and X.
Jacob Rogers
What about the Tactics games? I really enjoyed both the original Tactics game and the one on the DS.
Aaron Peterson
I should have clarified, artwork released in the years following VII. But yeah, he's not broody or emo in the original VII at all. He behaves like a kid trying his hardest to act cool.
Jaxon Howard
Advent Children (especially the Complete version) is a fun shitfest and Crisis Core is kino, don't bother with the rest.
Liam Baker
Why do people whine about edgy stuff? I love it. As long as you don't turn that to your real life personality it's cool. I'm sick of bingbing wahoo adventure in rainbow kingdom garbage
Alexander Clark
Tendies making up bullshit about their hated 'rivals' as usual. Same they did with crash & halo, same they're doing now with elden ring. It was always a fun series.
Tactics, Tactics Advance, and Tactics Advance 2 are all based on Tactics Ogre, but the Advances play moderately differently from the original. They're all great though and Tactics Advance brought arguably the most quotable FF line ever.
It depends on the product. If it's over the top edginess made for fun and crazy times while taking the piss every once in a while, that's great. If it takes itself way too seriously and is up its own ass with it, that's bad. If it happens way too often and becomes bland and predictable, that's also bad. Also people often mistake edginess for a good story and there's grimdark kind of edginess and then kiddie edginess. KH is filled with kiddie things. It's fine to enjoy it, but you can't call the story good because of that.
>Barrett loudly professes his righteousness in blowing up the reactors since Shinra is evil >Gets rebuked by Dyne who killed people that had nothing to do with his grudge >Gets rebuked by Reeve who at least can use his position in Shinra to save people >In the end he's able to recognize that there was nothing heroic in his actions and he killed innocent people on a personal grudge that had nothing to do with them >Is able to truly repent and become a genuine hero by the end
maybe the constant humor from the characters? but that would have to assume you actually played the game that you're rage posting about tourist.
Cameron Jackson
blame nomura for making people see it as an edgy emo thing
Julian Flores
This, but if you enjoy the first one you will probably like the remake too and everything shit about the remake is all new stuff Nomura added, if they kept it completely same with original, would have been 95/100 game, now its like 80/100.
Ian Martin
>Barrett looking like a marshmallow >Red standing on his hind legs to pretend to be a sailor >Reno and Rude discussing which girls they like, which is actually reflected in gameplay >everything about Honeybee Inn
FF7 knew how to balance serious moments and levity. You can't feel the gravity of the downs without having the ups first
Cameron Morris
Crisis core is alright
Mason Allen
I really wish Crisis Core was just about to war with Wutai. Because the Genesis shit is just the stupidest nonsense in that game
Aiden Reyes
It really is.
Brody Baker
>Discount Sephiroth is mad that Discount Hojo fucked up when making him. Because he wanted to be a hero so he could live out his chuuni poem fantasy. So instead he starts forcing his genetics into people to make clones until he can find a cure. And when he does find his chuuni goddess she immediately calls him an incel and makes him fuck off. And he's never seen again until Dirge of Cerberus, which teased a game that will never happen.
So I have a question: what exactly is Minerva. FF7's world isn't stated to have any gods other than the planet itself. So did they recon and there's just gods walking around underground? Or was that the planet just fucking with Genesis?
There's lots of things wrong with the movie but in my opinion the scene with Omnislash V5 alone makes it worth watching.
Isaac Harris
Absolutely, unless you're a genuine autistic teenager who wishes all Sonic media was about Shadow the Hedgehog and dark and serious with people being killed
Joseph James
nobody on Yea Forums post like 2007 knows what "Edgy" actually means
btw ff8 is the one that is supposed to be edgy, not 7, i don't even remember Yea Forums zoomers calling 7 edgy.
Joseph Nelson
watch advent children but ignore everything else. dont take advent children as canon its just a non canon thing.
Jordan Carter
Blame Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children.
Connor Williams
>the world birthed a goddess purely to call Genesis a faggot
Based.
Juan Miller
>Where did the whole "Final Fantasy VII is edgy" meme come from? 1. People who didn't play it 2. People who played it but managed to not understand absolutely anything and miss scenes 3. People who saw some trailer clips of advent children 4. People who are the same retards who will assure you squall is emo or edgy, cause they can't understand tone or imagine anyone else being not like they are
Matthew Collins
>All of the sequels and extend universe bullshit take the story in a completely different direction with lots of edginess.. This honestly isn't true at all. Crisis core wasn't edgy, none of the main characters were remotely edgy. Being sad or upset when something sad or upsetting happens isn't edgy. Likewise why advent children isn't edgy, it would be fucking retarded for cloud not to be sad and moping around when he's feeling, as anyone would, very guilty over his friends death and blames himself for it. And has jenova cancer on top. The only 'edgy' person really in the movie is fucking kadaj. Dirge wasn't edgy from the players perspective, sure nero was edgy as shit, maybe weiss too depending how you define it, but vincent wasn't being particularly edgy, infact if anything the opposite is true because he was connecting with shelke, and even rosso to some degree
Zachary Cook
you are thinking about Final Fantasy VIII
Dylan Wilson
>got control Why do people act like he just showed up at Square with KH or Advent Children? He worked at Square since FF3. He and Sakaguchi wrote the orignal story for FFVII, Nomura designed every character, NPC, boss, enemy, most areas, story boards, limit breaks, made the decision to only kill Aerith ofter Kitase wanted to kill off almost everyone in the plate crash etc. Nomura is the one who wanted to keep it as close to the orginal as possible though. You can literally see it in interviews. Why do people just make up random shit about Nomura or just blame him for everything. Kitase even wanted to turn it into an action game while Nomura wanted to also keep all the original mechanics like materia, atb, limit breaks etc. And Kitase and Nojima are the ones who want to add all the compilation shit and they + the combat designer want to change things up like the final section of the game and adding a Sephiroth fight early.
Dylan Nguyen
Because for better or worse Nomura is the face of Square Enix. It's why everything gets blamed on him even when he had nothing to do with it. Remember back when Final Fantasy XIII was new? Nomura got blamed for that too even though that was entirely Toriyama's fault.
