It isn't very over the top. It just drags out a bit which is more boring and then a big blood splatter which is the most under the top you can get with gore and violence.

What do you mean? Its exactly how it works. You go to a horror movie/play a horror videogame, knowing that this thing is supposed to be scary, so you subconciously steel yourself against it. Thats why i love thrillers so much, you never know whats coming, they are more subtle at that.
