it's true. 90s fighting games were comfy and did well in arcades and on home systems. Online wasn't a huge concern given the low numbers of people who used it on Gen 6 consoles.
When Gen 7 hit, the FGC were pandered to more and spent years telling devs to not bother with good online because they had locals. I didn't buy a Japanese FG between Tekken 6 and the rollback version of BBCF this year.

They suck all the fun out of any game they touch. And if they just kept to themselves, it wouldn't be so bad. But they don't; they demand that whatever game be made to cater to them and them alone, meaning you can really only play/enjoy the game in question if you're as autistically invested in it as the FGC is. You can't just hop online and have some casual fun, because the whole community will have been forced out by this point and all that will be left online is tryhards who will mop the floor with you because you don't devote all of your time to not just playing the game, but studying it too. They turn video games into chores. Not just for themselves, but for everyone else too.

The first GGPO game came out in 2008, and fightcade's for older games, and has a pretty small community.
