An honest answer? The region was locked to its own Pokemon much like the way Red and Blue were because no others existed outside the original 151 till Gold and Silver. Black and White made it feel like a brand new experience just as the original Red and Blue did because every Pokemon encounter, every trainer battle and every area you explored were all new and you never felt like "Oh, I've seen that before" or "I know rattata is shit so there's no point in catching it" etc

They're the most anti-genwunner games in the whole series. That is to say, they were an earnest attempt to make real successors to Gen 1, and didn't just cash in on Gen 1's enduring popularity among obese men.
They look great, too. After DPPt, the character designs were a breath of fresh air. Also, along with B2W2, they had the best art direction in the series. They look better than any game that came before them, and every game since gen 5 has looked like dog shit.

To answer your question OP I think they excelled at pushing the boundaries of what makes a pokemon game. GF listened to fan feedback over the years and B&W was the culmination of the community's love.
