i like how vaan is a wannabe hero, in the party with the main characters of other parties
nails that sort of arabian nights/treasure island feel

the steam revision is a little easy for my taste due to being able to use all job boards for free stats

You might like the Gambit system. It involves you a bit more than you think, because you make most of the automating choices yourself and also die a lot of the time because yes, using Gambits are a skill to master.

There was this one guy I think it was that Stellafag namefag who says that the best thing to do is to use Gambits on your party members but disable them on your active party member. I guess it helped me since Technicks and Gambits always failed on me whenever I tried them out.
