I had a ton of fun my first playthrough just listening to the main cast talk about each zone and interacting with NPCs. It's amazing how much the game benefits from having a cast of likable characters instead of mario being...mario, with partners that fall flat after their introductory chapter each time. There's a lot of soul in making every area come to life, and even though the game is lighthearted, it also plays the setting straight with how the characters live IN the world, whereas every paper mario from Super onwards keeps breaking the fourth wall with stupid paper puns every other line.

That's certainly part of it, the earnestness goes a long way in getting you invested in the setting while leaving the comedy for when the characters interact. Helps that there's also a hard mode that keeps the game pretty difficult until about the end of chapter 4 unless you figure out the poison attack stuff early. It's also the only "fans doing a spiritual successor" game I've felt captured the essence of why I fell in love with the games it homages to begin with.
