Thinking the opposite is what causes embarrassing retardation like thinking terms like "nakama" and "sensei" are untranslatable monoliths of Japanese culture and language.

I don't think translators should "fix" the original script if they consider it problematic because it stinks of western cultural imperialism when you have a bunch of white people with made-up pronouns assuming the script writer didn't mean for this morally ambiguous, imperfect character to say something so misogynistic.

All right Yea Forums, if you're so smart, take a crack at this untranslatable Japenese text

That's fucking retarded
These people are the reason of why dark souls is translated like dogshit

Women are never right

Unless the translators got direct line to the writers to actually discuss the characters motivations or thoughts in a certain panel or scene then they should shut the fuck up and stick as close to the translation as they can afford without making it sound unnatural. These retards are more likely to make the next Jesus painting botch job rather than a successful translation that improves the original.

>the more you practice this the more natural it becomes
In your head maybe, because there is nobody to judge your work anyways.

its about the jews

lol I studied this language for 4 years and still cant read shit
might as well kms at this point

You can really tell these people are self taught and never worked at a company with a mentor/teacher to learn the basics

All right Yea Forums, if you're so smart, take a crack at this untranslatable dialogue between two villagers in Animal Crossing.

This would only apply to light novels andother media.

You can not do this when you're translating something like a technical manual, or legal document. The potential consequences of something being lost in translation would be unacceptable.

>wojak poster can't even post the pasta
やれやれだぜ

Why don't they just use american alphabet instead of chinese alphabet which needs 3000 different characters for a school textbook?

>Us translators become almost text-psychologists!
Oh fuck off. What is it with people desperately trying to sound academic. You're a translator, just do your fucking job and translate the text.

she is indeed right.
the last person in that thread is a giant fucking retard though.

Here's an idea, how about you fucking work with the original writers on the translation

embarassing

i don't get it I only see squares

The quality peaks between simply doing your job to doing a shitty version.

And the reason...is they don't want to have to look things up.

nope.

trying to guess at the intentions of the creator is a retarded exercise in futility, the job of the translator is to provide as direct a translation as possible while communicating all the ideas present IN THE TEXT.

if it's not in the text it shouldn't be in the translation. if something is open to interpretation in the text it should be open to interpretation elsewhere. unfortunately this means that all am*ricans are unqualified to do any translation work.

>make it up as you go along
wow what a fucking insight

Isn't mandarin the spoken language?

asking here since why not: is there any place on 4chins that discusses webnovels? like novelupdates/royalroad kind of stuff.

any board or general?

ff8 ending changes a lot depending on which version you're playing

From japan? Mostly Yea Forums

This issue does not exist in business sphere. I wonder why

not just LN/WNs from japan. i imagine Yea Forums will throw a shitfit if you try to discuss KR or CN shit on there, unless something changed.

So localisation

Translation is a very delicate process, especially in the internet age where people will know if you’re fucking with the original texts.
There have been a few times in the past where translators just said “fuck it” and did their own thing and sometimes it was great (e,g Animal Crossing GC, Samurai Pizza Cats) but despite that I wouldn’t encourage it. Those are the exceptions, not the rule.

All these faggots need to burn in hell

The day we can reliably automate translations for written languages is taking way to long

>Japanese script:
>"Hmmm, this door seems to be locked."
>American translation:
>"Whoa this door is sus, really sus, like as sus as people who don't donate to BLM, am I right girl? Yeah, I'm right, definitely right, yeah."

Holy based.

>Thinking the opposite is what causes embarrassing retardation like thinking terms like "nakama" and "sensei" are untranslatable monoliths of Japanese culture and language.
same shit happens with English and my country (spanish speaking people). Some people stop thinking in Spanish and just say "nah there's words in English that explain things we cannot" when they're simply ignorant of their language

I hate localizers with the burning rage of a thousands suns

nice N5 faggot

those are called "borrowed words", esl. Not the same thing as autistic weebs jacking themselves off over the concept of japan in fansubs

These people should be publicly executed for thinking for a second that anyone gives a shit about their line of work, do the job and do it good. Fuck off with this twitter bullshit.

two problems there but they're fatal
>express the same idea
fine, if trannylators would actually do this, but they don't. they're on record all over social media boasting about how they change shit they find problematic.
>regardless of the specific words, grammar and punctuation of the original
no, it's dumb and too sweeping a statement to sever word choice and syntax from the 'idea' of a translation. They often contribute. Not all words in the same thesaurus entry are equal. A sentence that builds to a dramatic word reveal at the end shouldn't just have that rhythm ditched because a hack managed to approximate the 'idea' of the words, minus the drama of the moment. In my copy of the Divine Comedy it's crazy how the English translator managed to preserve so much of the original word order along with the terza rima rhyming scheme at the same time. Hacks like Meru just ditch those parts of the prose they find too hard to fit into their 'same idea' (which is often not an accurate idea) of the original, then go with it.

I don't think many native japs could tackle that one either. don't worry about it.

If the dialogue is easily replaceable by some tranny, why change it in the first place? Directly translate If it’s going to be shit, at least give me the original shit.

How is Japan using kanji in the wrong way?

trannylators are not human and it should be legal to kill them.

>Oh wow, i can't wait to engage in this piece of media that was created in a culture that's different to my own, i sure hope all those different cultural aspects will be nice to read!

The first line says something like
"Help me onii-chan, I'm stuck"

Looks like you need a font for Tangut, then wikiwand.com/en/Tangut_script
Unlike Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Zhuang, who developed new characters coined on the same rebus principle as Mandarin character words, creating Chu Nom and Sawndip, Japanese, Koreans, and Ryukyuans resorted to clumsily trying to phonetically transcribe their native vocabulary with Chinese characters instead of mass creating new characters for their language. This went on until kana and hangul were effectively plagiarized and used for native words. Japanese and Korean words like Joseon, Silla were transcribed with Chinese characters based on phonetic transliteration.
It's like a bunch of retards got their hands on Chinese and didn't know what to do with it.

Why do americans destroy and ruin other cultures?

Imagine doing this with any ancient text. These incompetent faggots can only do this because no one gives a shit, no one checks what they're doing and, most important of all, they don't give a shit about the original.

>this filters the /djt/ranny

No, Mandarin is both spoken and written. Many Chinese dialects are written very similarly, but they sound different. But many texts are simply written in Mandarin even if the speaker doesn't use that because Mandarin is used as the standard dialect.

>Imagine doing this with any ancient text.
well, there's this book called the bible

>1st "tip" for improving "translations" is to not translate the text you're supposed to be translating and just make shit up
