Why did it fail?

no heroes, no good events, patches are there only to change up the playstyle a bit and not to balance, fun heroes get dicked hard, esport failed, blizzard transitioned.

not enough bikini skins

They forgot to make the game fun

the porn is more interesting

It's a shitty spectator sport. Even Dota 2 is less of a visual clusterfuck.

They removed the free for all 5vs5 Mei arcade modes.
Players won't play your game if you will not let them play it the way they want to play it.

Individual impact was too low. No real star players like in Dota or CS. People like drama.

Because Competitive Snorewatch is shit.

There's a reason the game died as soon as they put in hero limits.

Imagine if olympic swimming took place in a kiddy pool
This is the root of the problem

Blizzard had/has no idea how balance the game.
Trying to combine MOBA elements (abilities, the DPS/Tank/Healer trifecta) into a class-based shooter is very tall order. Even if Team Fortress 2 was probably the blueprint for Overwatch, they're pretty dissimilar in terms of mechanics.
At least Riot can just siphon ideas straight from Counter Strike for Valorant before applying the "hero" part of "Hero Shooter"

Additionally, the game is a fucking eyesore to watch - ESPECIALLY if you are new/unfamiliar with the game's meta. Counter Strike, Valorant, even fucking Dota 2, as said, can be observed more easily. Overwatch is just a cacophony of abilities - all of which want to be the most important thing on the screen.

If that were the case, why quake and UT 1v1 scene ded

its too bloated to watch people have no idea what the fuck is going on

Because the FPS genre got bastardized over a decade ago due to Halo 1-3 and Call of Duty 4 for consoles. There's no money in the scene because there's no eyes.
The Arena shooter is dead.

they drove away the 99% fun havers by balancing the game for the 1% sweaties. ow was fun first few months but when season 3 came the game was in permanent downhill

Because the game isn't fun or balanced. And even games that are neither of those things can keep a big audience if they change the game frequently enough. Overwatch's patch cycle was pathetic. You had to wait months for balance changes that did nothing. Two new heroes a year that either warped the game or sucked ass. They had to rework half the base roster because they didn't understand what kind of game they were making. They ban you for picking characters they allow you to play because it's non-optimal. Every OWL game is mirrored comps smacking dicks together until one team jizzes out their ult combo and wipes.

Overwatch was made by an unfocused team that just wanted to make the next big FPS game for a MOBA market. We got all the baggage of MOBAs without any of the advantages.

i dunno what it is but everyone i meet who's a high-rank tryhard in overwatch is ten times more faggoty and annoying than in any other game

Ever played a MOBA?

Overwatch streamers did a really thorough job pushing the whole "if you're not GM you're fucking terrible and possibly mentally incapacitated" schtick.

Also the characters play too differently and some of them are frankly way easier than others but for equal or better value. So you get these chicks boosted to GM by holding left-click on their contenders simp but if you made them play solo on a new account they'd be plat until the heat death of the universe.

yes i played dota for 4000 hours from 2013 to 2017 and never saw people nearly as concerned and preoccupied with your rank as i do in overwatch. i swear some overwatch players define a whole-ass person by their overwatch rank. it's a fucking silly waifu shooter lmao

They took away Geometry Arrows

>Why did it fail?
Yea Forums's answer will be "they took away this dumb gimmicky thing i abused during my 5 total hours playing when the game came out and was a broken mess"

the actual answer is it's a trash game for esports because the maps are completely linear and the characters have vastly different skill floors and every single meta is a mirror meta

It didn't fucking sell as much they'd let you believe. Remember they would always count "unique players" which includes PC Bang smurfing and all the free periods(e.g. the months the game was free in China).

Anyway, people moved onto better games, like Fortnite and Call of Duty.

because quake and ut are less casualized, are you even trying? quake champions brought in moba elements but still requires far more thinking to stay ahead. champions would've been a decent competitor though had it's engine not been complete garbage.

>if you're not GM you're fucking terrible
>SR system never allows people to get out a division
more than the lack of individual impact, the lack of individual REWARD when losing a game makes all the high ranks just gatekept for the people who don't have the time but have the talent.

mystery heroes is the only mode worth playing.

>shit balancing
>social justice
>internet drama
>lack of updates
>shit community
TF2 is still fun at least

OWL moving away from Twitch was a mistake

>Niggers
>No nude sexy skins
>homosexuality and trans
>4v4 is better 1 supp 1 tank 2 dps

The game is simply not good nor interesting enough to watch, it is also visual aids when there are two or more abilities active.

Too sterile. Half the fun of pro sports is seeing the retard players do retarded shit like start dog fighting rings or crashing their cars.
Blizzard literally banned players for saying things that MIGHT be misconstrued.

they turned a somewhat fun hero shooter into a first person pinball game.
every character added after ana was a mistake

very true

true

also true

still true

and many many other reasons such as gamers around the world didnt understand the NFL-like system we are used to organic CSGO-like events, the casual origin, the lack of FPS mechanics, but too me the biggest problem is the impossibility to carry alone easliy compared to CSGO/Valorant or even LoL (with items). Maybe if they added items or cards it would've taken off. The game is just shallow mechanically, no bans, no items, easy CC champs.. not very hard.

Attached: 1627220935435.jpg (990x990, 113.17K)

Turning the color of EVERY SINGLE fucking effect into team colors was the single most retarded thing they could ever come up with, It's unbelievable.

Anyway, OWL is one thing. The entire OW is one huge pile of dogshit. I 100% believe that there isn't a single IP that had this much wasted potential on all fronts combined; casual gameplay, competitive gameplay, lore, etc. Just everything.

I can't wait for the fog to dissipate and all NDAs to fuck off so everyone can see just how utterly, imcomprehensibly, unbelievably mismanaged the entire OW2 situation was behind the scenes. Because OW2 is going to come out with absolutely pathetic, laughable amount of content. It's going to be like Tortanic.

Attached: 1595891139329.jpg (150x137, 6.94K)

Casual garbage with cancer characters never getting nerfed because developers like to play them (Ana).

>Because OW2 is going to come out with absolutely pathetic, laughable amount of content. It's going to be like Tortanic.
I'm awaiting this with a lot of anticipation.
Everyone in the OW community talks about OW2 as if it will surely be good and that the main issue is it just needs to be released already.
None of them seem to be asking "what if it sucks and everyone quits after a month again".

The thing is those "gimmicky" things were what made the game fun and when they were taken out, people lost interest now they were only stuck with the bland meta you mentioned. People losing interest in the game means people losing interest in the esport side

Primarily because a good esport always has an optimal viewing angle. Overwatch's action, despite being objective-based, is never focused enough to allow a good viewing experience, let alone an optimal one. The action is harder to read than something like Starcraft or even LoL/DOTA2.

That's the main thing. Balance, stagnant or boring to watch meta, lack of maps, etc. are all problems but they're more like little niggles compared to the main thing.

"""e-sports""" then
>game is well-made with excellent depth of skill
>players enjoy playing game
>players get good at game
>players end up looking for other good players
>bad and non-players enjoy watching good players because they enjoy playing the game and are passionate about it
>fun competitive scene naturally emerges
e-sports now
>game has lots of money thrown at it
>players play because they want lots of money
>game is shit and nobody enjoys playing it or watching it
>scene is pathetically corporate and artificial
>no fun allowed

The game is shallow

Actual answer is no substantial content support for past two years

>don't allow esports orgs to compete under their own brand
>instead invent [CITY] [plastic MLS team name] names for teams that aren't even location based
>create logos for teams that look like they were all drawn by the same dude
>feels like a knock-off sports game that couldn't secure licensing for a real-world league
>do everything possible to make broadcast/chat as sterile and unfun as possible
The game itself was shit but that was unironically the LEAST of the problems. APEX Season 1 was an incredibly fun event despite not having a proper observer mode at the time.

Overwatch mechanics and gameplay was shallow, it never worked as a professional game, so the organic way things turned out, was for people to troll and have fun like 5 Meis. You can't ever play Overwatch as an individual and make it, and it's more impossible to have a good team made of total randoms, so people just played for fun and trolling, that's why strangely, Platinum and every rank below it is fucking garbage to play in, because the higher ranks are actually gatekept for the same people. Blizzard didn't understand shit from this and forced it to be an esport game without redesigning it. They should've just kept it a fun game like Fortnite.

>pro scene got more financial investment than every other esport combined
any proof of this?
i don't doubt blizzard would be dumb enough to support the pro scene of a game that's been dead for years now

>>social justice
>>internet drama
you can't honestly blame those, because Blizzard themselves tried to pander for them, and they gathered around OW like flies. Notice how fortnite and valorant are safe from them, because those fags don't play games.

That's what happens when you force yourself to play a shit game to grind for some loot boxes and an imaginary rank that will get reset every few months.

Awful to watch + sterile broadcast +

will LoL ever be topped as the king of esports?

>i don't doubt blizzard would be dumb enough to support the pro scene of a game that's been dead for years now
don't worry, they fleeced twitch and nfl owners for the funding. the investment has been a shocking failure but it's not blizzard holding the bag.

dexerto.com/overwatch/behind-the-scenes-at-the-owl-reactions-to-the-lawsuit-and-the-future-of-the-league-1642147/

we have this thread every 3 days or so, fuck off

the ones you're referring to are just porn dumps, this one's been fairly serious

Overwatch is unwatchable. That is the key. it is easy to watch games like SC2 or DOTA 2 or Siege even if you dont play them. But even if you do play Overwatch it is not any fun to watch. The fact that A-B top-down built this pro league and claimed the teams are based in cities even though every player is some fobby Korean doesnt help.

A-B would have been better served trying to rehabilitate StarCraft 2 but they were so butthurt about DOTA they turned this horrible meme game into shitty esport.

But even if they didnt do all that the game would have died long ago, because Blizzard wrung all fun out of the game to pander to reddit tryhards, and turned the cast and lore (which at launch was at least somewhat interesting) into shit because they decided to pander to faggot checkmarks on twitter.

Exactly it. You can't make a real eSports scene just by throwing money at it.

esports kills games, thats why

zero-cost ability games with no scaling throughout match progression is snoozer, especially when the game makes the abilities too game changing.

>Blizzard had/has no idea how balance the game.
It's really hilarious how Paladins has a bunch of flaws but is still way better gameplay-wise than OW. Especially with the maps.

Games designed to be esports are destined to fail as both esports and casual games.

If you want a real answer its because they did everything in their power to make the game as unfun as possible.

Horrendous game balance, everything was either ridiculously over powered or nigh utterly useless. Every/any update to the game made things worse in all senses of the word from either taking something that was useless and making it OP, taking something that didnt need changing at all and made it worse, or taking something that was OP and nerfing it into the ground to uselessness and then never changing it ever again. All new characters that were added were way to useful and good as to power creep the rest of the roster. Healing was/is too good and can bring someone from low HP back to completely full in less than like 2 seconds so any/all damage or powers used to achieve that damage is now useless; it makes the game extremely boring to play and leads only to tactics and strats that abuse "instant" kills and nothing else. Some classes (sniper) are worthless for the game as 99.5% of the entire playerbase of that class is utter dogshit and couldnt get a kill to save their lives.

And so much more its hard to list them all. The game was fun but everything they did for the game made it worse in some aspect. I have no faith at all in OW2 being good in any way. If they had any brains at all they would atleast attempt to make the gameplay good and balance it correctly as well as make the game free.

>every player is some fobby Korean doesnt help
This is actually the problem by the way.

Nobody in the west wants watch Asian males play video games. They play games the most boring and robotic way possible, are ugly as sin, have 0 personality, and do not create entertaining content outside of their team events.

Nobody in the east plays FPS.

Recipe for disaster.

forced esports

>making +2 paragraph posts just to reply to something that can be answered in two words
ngmi

I agree, me and my bros have been using the phrase "artificial esports" to describe overwatch

overwatch has an identity crisis between a competitive shooter and an arcadey action hero game, it's just boring to watch
that and the devs were obsessed with making a competitive game in an inherently competitive genre as welcoming and inclusive as possible, aka; getitng rid of the people that actually play your game and banning people if they want to take the game seriously

Melee is the esport with the most soul

Attached: mango seinfeld.png (1357x1010, 2.01M)

> Remember they would always count "unique players" which includes PC Bang smurfing and all the free periods
And that number can't go down. IIRC they did things like giving it away in Mexico if you bought a printer or something and probably counted all those copies in cumulative sales even if they never played.

>champions would've been a decent competitor though had it's engine not been complete garbage
The engine was not the only thing holding QC back.
