If you were going to only pick one of the 3DS games then pick Untold 2 classic mode. If you have Twilightmenu then 3 is a must play

Start with IV, is the most beginner friendly of the bunch and also my favorite. Also, you should be able to play III in TwilightMenu++. Leave Nexus until the very end since is a celebratory game with returning stratums and a lot of references to older games.

Best balance in the series, you could make a team of five Medics and beat the game. Granted, it also makes the game easier than the rest until you reach the postgame stratum.

That is true, it's not as easy to mod as tossing in a SD and running a file.
But the extra shit you get from hacking makes it worth it. Backing up saves, action replay shit, homebrew, there's even a tool to overwrite save files on a physical cart, which I used to give myself a living pokedex without setting off any flags to pokebank.

If you don't care enough about videogames to spend 30 minutes on upgrading your device then why are you here?

1U is more difficult. And while the story party isn't bad, if you don't know what you're doing its easy to spend your skill points poorly and start having a hard time.
4 helps alleviate this issue by not only being a bit easier but also by giving you a couple level up scrolls and pre level recruits so you can replace people more easily
Though really if you're having a really hard time you could always lower the difficulty, though I imagine most people would refuse to do that.

No Himukai and no Koshiro, no buy, simple as that.

Atlus stopped being good around the 3DS era when they started asking for $50 dollar games and grinding DLC. At least the team that worked on EO still managed to make ok games but from EOU2 onward I didn't enjoy nearly as much as the older games

hey so how strongly do you have to adhere to meta units / comps in these games? can i just use characters that i like the look of? is it possible to mess up my build so badly that my character becomes useless?

I'm no expert I only cleared one etrian(EOU1) as far I'm aware each game has a medic and protector like class and those are the core of your team and you always want those 2 unless you know exactly what you're doing, other than that it's free game and you can always respec at cost of losing some levels.

You do generally need a comp with good synergy, but you can still use pretty much whatever you want. You'll almost certainly want both a tank and healer, but you can certainly get away with only one of the two, or none is you really know what you're doing.

Maybe not completely useless, but probably close to that. But it's also easy to fix. You can reset your spent skill points at the cost of 2 levels. Though it costs more in the earlier games, I believe it's a whole 10 in the original game.

Trying to do something that isn't tank/healer/2dps/wildcard is tough but is doable with good foresight. the actual class to class balance is usually pretty good outside of EO2 and a few shitty classes nobody wanted to use anyway in EO3

when in doubt, always start with the first one. if you start with a later title itll be very hard to get into the older ones again because youll be used to a way more refined formula. if you start with the first one you can experience it like it was meant to be and move on to the next and appreciate all the improvements that much more. going back will only make you hate it.

Other EOU2 none of the DLC is even remotely worth buying, it's all p2w shit, and the FM music for 5 sucks. U2 had a bunch of boss fights and even a 31st floor as DLC but some of them were given out for free back when it released.
