I've played through this masterpiece several times, and it's one of the best games and storylines ever I literally want to do in the future a tattoo on my forearm with 2B biting her finger. Of course the game isn't perfect, it has stupid limitations in places, sometimes poor textures, or it's monotonous for a while (mostly by the B road), game is oddly scaled - on normal it goes too easy, and on hard the first boss has you on 1 shot, not to mention ultra hard, and side quests are sometimes spread over two or even three routes (like that kung fu machine, or the colosseum)
But as I wrote earlier, these few small flaws don't cover the mastery of this game. I still have philosophical and existential thoughts about this game.

Fun game, I'm not playing it again. Quality of life is on a level of a ps2 game. The game tells you it doesn't auto save, except it sometimes does auto save. 9s has an entire move set but there's no information about it in the game or in the manual. There's no real fast travel. The combat is kinda shallow as well. The story is basically anime, it's japoonese brain worms and melodrama, weebs may like it, everybody else with just cringe. Toobs' ass though? Ten out of ten.

Really great game, OST especially. My only real complaint is the fanbase who are either coomers or 2DEEP4U because they name drop philosophers and give surface level interpretations of their schools of thought. Its also gotten stupidly popular which is a double edged sword, so now its guaranteed to have more games but at the same time its featured in gacha, fallguys, and pubg. There are definitely some story issues, plot pacing issues, inconsistent themes, and underexplored ideas that get glossed over by the whole.

No, you don't NEED to play Replicant first.
Obviously you will miss some references, but every single DrakeNieR game is still a standalone title, no matter their lore connections. You don't see too many people recommending playing the Drakengard1 before NieR, no matter that latter's literally a sequel to one of DoD1's endings.

In fact, starting with Automata can help you sit through the franchise's previous games much more easily afterwards. That's how I did it myself years ago; hunted down all the games after finishing N:A, and marathoned them.

Nah, it really only spoils the main twist in Replicant if you manage to find and read a bunch of text logs and even then the twist isn't that good or well-thought out in the first place. The two are basically independent stories that just share the same world. Also Automata is a lot better than Replicant to the point I feel playing Replicant first might turn you off on continuing to play Automata.

The sealed verses were largely the same as the pod programs and except for one or two very specific characters Automata has Replicant beat (though I will say that's largely subjective). The other points are very fair but are kinda minor compared to some of the very serious pacing and grinding issues that Replicant suffers from. Fishing far more engaging in Replicant though, I'll give ya that.

the hammer pod program feels like shit compared to the blood fist, the only pod program that feels good to use is the starting laser. As for characters, 2B is boring, A2 is barely in the game and the resistence members are basically background characters. One of my favourite things about Replicant was the groups chemistry and hearing the great writing between them through every quest, Automata has almost none of this.

its totally fine that you personally prefer those characters and writing but there's a lot of people that would disagree with that as it is largely subjective. I could argue that Automata actually has both better characters and writing but I feel that's a moot point since its largely subjective and any objective argument made on the subject would be incredibly nit-picky. As it stands though, Automata still simply has better gameplay and far better pacing. While Replicant's character may or may not be better (as well as a single combat mechanic), you can't deny that Automata just has a far superior story overall.

My honest opinion is that i like it and consider it art. It has a very melancholic atmosphere, i love the themes, the art design and specially the music. Combat is okay and has enough variety too. I like how it switches from ARPG combat to side scroller or space invaders. I also like the areas like the theme park, the flooded city, the factory and that white construct thing.
