SA2 was the last game in the series to have a real story. It has stakes, action, emotion, themes, message, builds on prior games in a meaningful way and expands on the world and characters of sonic.
Every game since then has been bare minimum framing and self deprecating cringe comedy

SA2 added nothing positive to the Sonic franchise
>Shadow as a character WAS fine. Emphasis on WAS. He should have stayed dead because his entire character arc was completely finished and there was no more to do with him but they brought him back anyway.
>Rouge adds nothing to the Sonic world and is a flat uninteresting character who won't organically get involved with any future Sonic plot. They ended up having her become a satellite character to Shadow because they didn't know what to do with her.
>President and GUN add nothing other than pointless "realism" that takes away from the fantasy aspects of the Sonic world while adding nothing.
