>turn based JRPGs have been dying for years
>even FFVII remake requires brainless mashing to build up your meter so you can actually use proper JRPG mechanics
Are modern gamers just too dumb and ADHD-ridden to appreciate classic JRPG gameplay? Final Fantasy gameplay used to mean something that set us intelligent gamers apart from the mindless button-mashing drones plaguing the market today...
Turn based JRPGs have been dying for years
Enlightened gamers will buy deep strategical masterpieces like dragon quest, it's just shallow trash like SaGa that performs poorly.
What is the last good jrpg released?
FF7
Octopath Traveller
Romancing SaGa 3.
I think the greater technical capabilities of games have made the degree of abstraction in turn based combat less necessary. Persona 5 did pretty well, though.
>dmc clone
have you even played DMC? it's nothing like FF7R
That's a funny way of being obsessed.
>run around and slash stuff
i don't see the difference
I thought I wanted a modern turn based JRPG until I played Octopath with its 5 hour boss fights. The battle system was good at first until the only way to push the difficulty was to give enemies mind numbing HP pools and regenerative abilities
Even the massively underleveled speedrun strats that focus on debuff lockdown and preventing turns with only one character on damage output take only a few turns to kill the bosses. Literally git gud.
With the exception of X, mainline Final Fantasy hasn't been a turn based game since III you nostalgia-addled fuckhead.
no its just people don't suck at games anymore, have a lot more resources to figure out optimal routes and playstyles, and how to build parties in jrpgs more efficiently since they've been roughly the same formula for all these years
SaGa is not deep or strategical. The difficulty comes from hiding everything from the player and setting character growth behind horrible RNG mechanics. Add in enemies packing instant death attacks up the wazoo and you have a system that only masochists enjoy.
I mean, Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse and Etrian Odyssey Nexus (or maybe just Untold 2 if you're a purist) come to mind. Atlus is very good at preserving the turn based JRPG nature of this slice of videogames. You could throw a dart at a board pocked with nothing but games made by atlus and you'll probably land on a 9-10/10 jrpg.
I liked The Last Remnant.
What is a turn-based JRPG that actually takes skill to beat? And I don't mean just requiring hitting weaknesses or using buffs/debuffs/status consistently to beat it
Well skill in videogames are usually broken into two categories. Twitch/reaction skill in most shooters or action games, or knowledge skill in most turn based games. You're basically looking for a JRPG game that doesn't rely on knowledge, or at the very least doesn't rely on a very specific kind of knowledge.
Are you sure you're looking for a JRPG at all?
ATB is not turn based
>implying you need any sort of brainpower to play jrpgs
It's always been the genre you go to when you want to turn off your brain.
Normies don't like first person view RPGs aka Wizardry clones. Even Persona fags avoided the Persona Q games like the plague. Theeen again most persona fags don't play Persona.
It is turn based, the ATB just affects the speed at which turns occur.
ATB is just a visual representation of turns, and not acting is spending that turn waiting.
Also you can set the game to Wait so fuck you.
That's because you're retarded!
The SMT 3 Nocturne extra hard mod probably requires genuine skill to beat from what I know
just because new games come out doesn't mean old ones go away, if you enjoy older turn-based games go play them.
anyway, octopath had a big budget and that was still turn based, they exist still its just not got the biggest pool of fans
>ATBshit
>proper JRPG mechanics
That trash ruined turn based games.
The idea that "turn based" is old is what OP doesn't like. How can an entire genre of JRPGs be classified as "outdated"? I agree with him, kids are too ADHD to appreciate proper planning in games anymore.
>requires
There's a special mode made JUST for people like you and you still fucking whine. What is your problem?
Ruined mainstream turn based games maybe. A lot of extremely good JRPGs are out there, you're probably just not looking for them. Hint: Atlus
bro
do I fucking have news for you
wait until the end of this month
as long as Japan exists, we'll keep getting good JRPGs
SaGa Scarlet Grace in December of 2019
What did you have to plan in ff7 original that don't in the remake?
Genuinely curious.
I mean, combat in JRPGs that don't allow one basic strategy to dominate every single fight (i.e. debuffing an enemy so you can buff yourself to make yourself invincible) often boil down to being a puzzle to solve, so I guess I'm looking for games where that puzzle is actually good outside of just noticing that the boss has another targetable spot that you can hit to break its defense or something
Is this going to be released in Hánzhí only?
ATB SOUL
XV/VII R SOULLESS
no. just no.
Pokemon Sword & Shield
Undertale
ATB is trash
Paper mario: Master Quest
>>even FFVII remake requires brainless mashing to build up your meter so you can actually use proper JRPG mechanics
>brainless mashing
>when you literally just hold a button
What, is having to pay attention to surroundings and damage in-between doing abilities actually that challenging to your puny boomer brain?
Brainless mashing? Did you even play the FF7R demo? You're supposed to hold to continuously attack. Enjoy blowing through all your potions trying to mash through the boss.
FFVIIR just in the demo is already more complicated than the original.
who knows, it might get an english version, since it's by the same company as Venus Blood Frontier
nocturne and SMT games in general have an advantage since fusing demons and getting newer shinier ones is fun, so getting a party member that has some elemental advantage or support move that you need for a boss isn't just a matter of swapping out one party member you got during the storyline in reserve for another
also I think it's super important how that also ties into making money a precious resource that gets you some cool designed demons through compendium fusing instead of just buying a billion potions you never use or buying some armor that will be obsolete after an hour
Yeah, I was completely walled for instance on the Red Rider until I got the defense up kaja, press turn is also a cool idea that becomes essential once difficulty ramps up. I still wish the game had weapons but that's probably it.
Game is overrated as fuck
It took ten steps back from FF5's freeform character building for some shitty materia that have abilities that aren't even permanent on them.
Also the story is just melodramatic teen angst, not sure why people have been sucking it off for the past 2 decades, it really doesn't do anything substantial compared to the 6 games prior to it other than Limits, which is just "wait long enough do cool flashy move"
fucking please
It has one of the best worlds in any video game flat out.
How is FFV more freeform than FFVII? Being restricted by jobs is less free by definition. Not to say that's automatically a bad thing, you're just using words incorrectly.
>the story is just melodramatic teen angst
The super blatant themes went way over your head apparently.
Dragon Quest XI. The fact that nobody has replied this is depressing as fuck.
Materia is good though.
its games like FF4,6 and 9 that are restrictive and boring.
Dragon Quest 11
many consider it meh, even DQ fans
You fuckers better be buying Yakuza 7 then
>It is turn based, the ATB just affects the speed at which turns occur
If original FF7 is turn based then the remake is every bit as turn based. All of your abilites, magic, and items are locked behind ATB.
Even a mediocre Dragon Quest game is still a great JRPG.
It really didnt
Every single place you go to is disconnected from the others and the people who you meet there have nothing of value to say about anyone from another area unless its specifically story related.
Compare that to FF4 where people from different nations are directly contributing to different factions and ultimately coming together to stop a greater evil in the end. FF7 has nothing on that, even half the party members become irrelevant, so irrelevant that 2 are completely optional.
It's more freeform in the vein that it's infinitely less restricted if you work for it, I'm aware of how wording words work
The themes are just about Cloud getting over his angst, it's all central to that. No character besides him have an arc, and its solely to get over this odd fixation with Sephiroth, it's why he's the one who solo axes him at the very end, its all about that and it's pretty shit
That's why 5 is the best user
>If original FF7 is turn based then the remake is every bit as turn based.
It's not. ATB is not turn-based.
So it's a slightly modified ATB where the gauge only moves when holding/mashing a button
Unironically what you're looking for is something like Undertale, if Undertale was actually difficult, since every single enemy in the game has to be dealt with in a different way.
You're the first person I've ever seen call it meh.
>Always hated ATB
It's not really a great system. Pure turn base where buff and debuffs are major things to the combat is where turn base really shines. ATB adding a stupid timer to everything throws that out the window and why buff and debuffs are not really things people use in Final Fantasy.
If ATB is turn based, then fucking Final Fantasy XII is as well.
If I was to make a jrpg it would be like this.
its not really my opinion.
lmao pussy did sans fuck your mom?
Old is bad, everythig new is better always.
Buffs and debuffs are a retarded mechanic. You’re going to end up using it for every battle and just adds an unnecessary step.
DQ11
jrpgs are literally proto movie games.
You're thinking of Half-Life
>You’re going to end up using it for every battle
while by that metric all jrpg combat is retarded. just have the player press X to continue.
and desu I think that would improve a lot of them.
I guess, but that barely counts as turn based since the entire combat system is based around a 5 second shmup sequence
Unless you mean the dialogue options to win, and that's fine, but I feel like they're way too arbitrary 90% of the time to be considered strategic outside of trial and error
or just glorified visual novels
I said "IF" undertale was actually difficult.
Not him, but I rank it at the bottom. Certainly a good JRPG, no doubt about that, but it disappointed me greatly. Most people would think my criticisms are nitpicks but I have a dozen of them and all together, they add up to make it worse than, say, VI which a lot of fans don't like. It's better than II at least. Mainly, I just don't like the weird "quality of life" added to it that makes it easier than ever, which they had to compensate for with draconian trials that weren't tested very well in QA. It should have one difficulty that isn't too easy or too hard. It's amazing that they can mess up such a consistent formula. Forging is more tedious than alchemy because you go out of your way for it, whereas alchemy can be done while you're exploring. At the same time, materials were WAY too abundant, weapons and armour are crafted too easily, rendering shops useless and thus gold. Camps are a nightmare and shit, there's a fucking minimap eating the screen and ruining exploration. The only redeeming factor of XI is the characters and that it's still "standard" and not experimental. I got a lot of out it and it's good, but fuck is it disappointing compared to previous entries.
now that's what I call cope: volume 11
yeah it isn't difficult because you're too pussy to do genocide lmao scared of a skeleton?
ATB is objectively turn based.
Yes.
But I diagree about FF being for "intelligent gamers", unless you meant "more intelligent than current gamers"
7r's combat has more depth in its demo than the entirety of the original game's combat
anyone else love that they added speedup and cheats to the FF pc releases?
I really liked experiencing my childhood games again without all the boring combat.
no this isn't bait.
Which was was the first FPS to abandon gameplay for scripted unskippable cutscenes? Truth hurts, doesn't it.
Why are you automatically assuming I haven't done genocide? And why are you saying Sans is hard?
half life is for fags lmao.
keep coping. do you also play snoy and visual novels?
Name your top 3 games right now.
because you haven't you noob you play shitty jrpg games. snas would fuck ur mum LOL
The problem isn't the gameplay, it's the quality. JRPGs have been generally well regarded, which makes sense because they're intended to be casual/light console games, so there's no reason for players to be ignoring them on account of accessibility.
jrpg are for tranime watching fags.
when you play a jrpg, you're on the path to slicing off your dick
>Yakuza 7
>Death end re;Quest 2
>Fairy Tail
>Metal Max Xeno Reborn
>Hajimari no Kiseki
Turn-based RPGs don't seem to be dying to me.
Dragon Quest XI and Kingdom Hearts III
Anyone who thinks jrpgs are dying just don't play anything other than mainstream garbage
Okay tranny.
i liked Alliance Alive
He said last "good", not "great."
you talk like a fag and your shits all fucked up
name 5 good jrpgs released in the last 30 seconds you literally can't.
>I feel bad and now i have to show it to everyone in this thread
Epic Battle Fantasy 5
I think you forgot something
all me by the way
LOL nice thread fags. smell ya later
Everyone uses haste in the ATB Final Fantasy games.
>ATB is not turn based
>turn based JRPGs have been dying for years
Because they literally haven't innovated or progressed one iota in more than 20 fucking years. Jrpg developers just use 'turn-based combat' to be lazy and not put any effort in game design. The fact that a 60 dollar game like Octopath still uses the outdated random encounter design is just embarassing.
The defining aspect of a turn-based system is that it's split up into discrete time units: turns.
In an ATB game, time still progresses during your turn and enemies can still hit you during your turn, thus undermining the defining aspect of a turn-based system. ATB is not turn-based.
>b-b-but wait mode
wait mode is nothing more than a clumsy bandaid to a crappy system, because you still have to tediously 'retreat' into the magic/item menu, otherwise you still get hit on your turn.
what genres have progressed or innovated in the last twenty years?
how come generic trash shooters and sports games are still popular even though they changed even less?
what makes you think that random encounters are an outdated concept when they were designed that way intentionally?
why is your shitposting so weak?
i know i should expect anything from kotaku but jesus christ
>what genres have progressed or innovated in the last twenty years?
action-rpgs, for example
>what makes you think that random encounters are an outdated concept when they were designed that way intentionally?
random encounters originated from dungeon crawlers, where they actually make sense. the issue is that jrpgs copied the gameplay of dungeon crawlers despite being completely at odds with the sort of intense story-driven experience jrpgs tend to be. it just doesn't work
lmao
Yea Forums is extremely casual and only plays AAA shit
Since when
>grind to level up
>use your best attacks
>cure when necessary
>rinse and repeat
requires any more intelligence than other kinds of games?
grinding to level up is already really low IQ and you failed the test.
The brainlet post of the day, in the brainlet thread of the day.
I needed this
>It's another boomer unwilling to adapt complaining about objectively better battle systems thread
How blinded by nostalgia do you have to be to think that any FF game before X has gameplay worth a damn?
I just bought this on Steam. Always been a fan of the SaGa games but RS3 never had a full English translation till just recent.
Fucking love it.
Anyone on Crystal data center wanna queue up alliance roulette pl0x?
>X
>each phases nothing happens, the enemy does nothing, unless you give your character a command
>literally combat for elderlies where each round is auto-paused
DQ XI:S
i fuckin loved ff4, i considered playing the after years. But everyone says it was trash, so ive been putting off trying it
>others hated it
Never trust Yea Forums. Yea Forums's opinions are always wrong.
>I have never heard the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
Innovating an rpg causes shit like FF13 or 12.
Except FF12 was amazing in terms of world and gameplay. The story was ass though
FF XII was great if only for gambits.
