I'm convinced that Ken fell in love with Elizabeth during development and rewrote the plot to focus more on her and less on social commentary, worldbuilding, developing other characters, gameplay that isn't just arena shooting, etc. It really does feel like the game has all this momentum going for exploring Columbia' downfall, only to just sort of get bored of it and focus on muh doctor who physics. I wouldn't even be surprised if Booker being Elizabeth's dad was thrown in just so Ken wouldn't feel cucked by his own protagonist.

Although, his plans for all of this, rely on Columbia itself purging the earth (or America at least), when we see that it technologically stagnates. So that his dreams come to fruition, via Elizabeth, sometime in like the 1980s, where Columbia is still a floating 1900s city atop balloons and spinning fans and their military is still airships, versus 1980s America/the world.

Like, even 1980s Africa, could defeat Columbia.

Cumstick hated that America wasn't completely subservient to God, so he made Colombia to have an America he could be proud of.

He wanted Elizabeth to firebomb America when she grew older (he couldn't amass the firepower they'd need in his lifetime)

You get a brief glimpse of this when Elizabeth pulls you out of your universe during your quest to save her to chastise you for not saving her.

Too bad the story and gameplay were shit; Ken Levine gives up exploring his own narrative and developing his own characters once Elizabeth shows up, so we're left with half-assed criticism and a game rushing to fellate it's own twist ending.

Even if you ignore the blatantly obvious inference that any organized attempt to eradicate Comstock by Elizabeths is doomed to fail due to the simple nature of infinite branching paths (or even interference from countless edgy old elizabeths), what exactly is the point of preventing Comstock from coming into being?
Booker is still objectively a deadbeat drunk gambler murderbot willing to sell his own daughter in the "original" world, her life without the trade would still be shit, arguably even worse. At least Comstock gave her a pet bird.

i'd say the weak console hardware at the time, plus the peak of cod's popularity in 2011 made them casualize the game from its original vision.
The final build we have was made in 2 years, doesn't resemble something that was made since 2008. They even had to scrap the engine and cut weather mechanics, which affected the way some of the city floated.

The worst part of that segment is that you get rewarded with an item later on regardless of your choice in that segment. If you don't meet the couple again later you meet a pro-racist NPC who gives you something.

You could argue that it plays into the whole idea of predeterminisation the game sets out but I'd argue that removing all choice makes the player detatched from the story since there's no sense they're influencing things and are just going through the motions.

It feels like it was the kind of thing that started off as just BioShock in the sky, but they made it up as it went along, then said "oh shit, we've come too far off the path" then added in the alternate dimension "constants and variables" time travel shit as a desperate attempt to reconnect to the first two games, which Burial at Sea (while fun) made so much worse.

God was this game disappointing - disappointing because it was so promising at first. I only played it a number of years after it came out, once I bought a new computer. It was the first game I installed and I was completely blown away by the graphics, the art direction and the general aesthetic of the setting (the whole turn of the century American nationalism theme, the Gilded Age setting, the anti-Orientalist Boxer rebellion displays in the museum, etc). Many have pointed out before that Bioshock Infinite is a further step towards simplification that was already taken by Bioshock vis-a-vis System Shock, but if this remained a cinematic experience the way it was in the first half of the game, I wouldn't mind.
It is such a shame, therefore, that they had to insert so blatantly stupid time travel element, hiding gaping plot holes behind a cover of pretentiousness. The expansion, too, started out promising but behind the absolutely breath-taking aesthetic that takes the original Bioshock's amazing underwater city look and takes it to a whole new level, there is not much worth defending because that too suffers from a stupid story.

They do state his goals. He used the dimension hopping machine to peer into the future and saw an old Elizabeth using the weapons of Columbia to destroy New York City which he believed was the reincarnation of Sodom and Gamorrah. Everything he was doing was to make this future happen because it showed that he and his followers were right about their way of life.

That could have been many of us in his position. Imagine being a director and you get to gradually watch your waifu not just drawn, but fully animated and voiced.

No it was Kevin Levine not being able to come up with a workable story and with 6 months left to launch they basically scrapped most of the game for the shit Levine writes. Comstock was originally not alternate dimension Booker but a totally different person with no beard as you can tell from how bad the beard looks on Comstock in the final product. It also was going to be about American Exceptionalism which is why in the old gameplay video Elizabeth puts on a giant Abe Lincoln head and says "Four score and seven years ago" in a silly voice. There was also a boss against some crazy guy wearing an Uncle Sam looking outfit firing a canon at you from across the city. The final product had Columbia be more of a continuation of the Confederacy minus slavery even going as far as revering John Wilkes Booth as a holy person who killed Abe Lincoln depicted with a devil face. This game had no idea what it wanted to be. First it wasn't going to have any connection to the first two Bioshock games and then it turns out that all the power-ups and machinery ARE the result of reverse engineering tech from Rapture via the dimension hopping machine. The dimension machine and the floating city are the only things unique to Infinite. I was so disappointed when they reveal this though those recordings.

I'm actually replaying the entire bioshock series now and I have to say that Infinite has pretty fun gameplay, especially compared to the first 2 which play like absolute ass. But the story of Infinite feels like it was gutted, rushed, altered so many times that any potential it had was left on the cutting floor. However, Elizabeth is easily one of the most likable videogame companions there is, so there's that.

you can tell how rushed to shit the game is based on the transitions that occur between the major areas

like, having to track down a lightning plasmid to power up a generator in that one zone to access the next area. there are like three generators in the entire game and all of them are in that one zone and never show up again

and then you have the shit with the gate to comstock house and the stupid DNA lock on it and then it just gets blown up by ghost mom rendering liz's dumb graverobbing plan moot

or when you finally get on that airship only for liz to knock you out for several hours with a single wrench blow when youve been tanking punches from giant robots all day and then daisy teleports in and kicks you off into the slums

and then the whole jumping around like two or three dimensions in the slums to complete a deal that doesnt exist anymore to get an airship even though you destroy an airship while on said errand to obtain an airship

its all over the fucking place and when you actually look at the shit going on its complete nonsense
