It's pretty dated and the PC Port is not so good (specially if you don't use Kaldaien's Special K), but as a game is fun enough. The story is not particularly impressive, but the world and the character interactions can be amusing enough.
I had a fun time playing it back when the Tales of General came back from dead with Vesperia Remaster's release.

I thought the English dub team was amazing in this game, but Kamoana's voice was a big fucking mistake.

It's more like 90% of Tales threads that are exclusively Berseria-focused, which are, coincidentally, always the bad ones

Berseria's subtitles are obscenely bad and often will fucking "spell out" words using other words.

The game is riddled with typos that could have been easily fixed if someone proof-read the script.

That's a little beyond the realm of a typo chief.

pleb tales fan here. i've played a good number of the games but never stuck around and actually beat one. at this point i own nearly all of them and have sampled each a bit before putting them into my backlog. im in the mood now for some comfort food mindless grinding. looking for general advice for which one to power though of these three.

fellow pleb here. Vesperia gets its dick sucked endlessly in here so I'm gonna guess that's the most fun one, but I haven't played it either. Also I'm pretty sure the 3DS port of Abyss isn't very popular.

Abyss and Vesperia are both good choices. I would personally choose Abyss since it has one of my favourite battle systems.

It's not that bad. I played through all of Berseria and I don't even remember a single instance of any typos. Though I played it in English so I probably just wasn't paying attention to the subtitles.

The subtitles have embarrassing mistakes but they are fine like 90% of the time.

Taipei Game Show got postponed thanks to corona.

I'm hoping for a state of play or something soon.

You must have not played any of the side quests then because I remember absolutely none of them having completely correct subtitles. I was using the dub (Tales tradition for me, don't know why) so it wasn't a huge bother for me, but I feel bad for subfags on this one.

I guess the only question I have is would this work on an actual PS2, since apparently there is some sort of issue with crashing in cutscenes without a certain cheat file loaded into pcsx2. I figure I could give it a test later, but if you happen to know it could save me the trouble.

Legendianon tested it on console and claims that it works perfectly.
The cheat file you need to fix cutscene crashes is included in that mega link, by the way. As are the instructions on how to use it. It's the .pnach file.

I just finished the game this week, and I noticed about a dozen or so places where the text was butchered like this, but it was obviously phonetically close to the spoken dialogue, like they just generated the text with some voice-to-text program. Pretty weird.
