Now I ask why is it that we can make non-realistic concessions in some areas (such as your soldier being able to respawn from death, from being able to heal bullet wounds in seconds instead of months, and being able to proficiently operate every single type of vehicle) but you can't make concessions with there being a few more women on the battlefield? I don't believe they are pushing anything more than this being a video game and that you can make a few concessions to make it more enjoyable to a wider audience.

Obviously, this is a video game, and it's based on World War II, but it being a video game it will make concessions in terms to how things have really played out in reality.

If we go with the necessity argument things will get messy. Now, we already know that it is a necessity for a shooter to make some fairly large concessions in terms of realism to make an enjoyable game. But if we're going down this route, and we have already gotten rid of the pretense of realism in the gameplay mechanics, why is it a necessity for realism in the historical perspective?

Look at film, they also skew realism in order to work as films by omitting parts that no one would want to see. You watch a war film you're guaranteed to not spend any amount of time stuck watching someone's patrol route where absolutely nothing of interest happens whatsoever. Chances are the film has also been given a story that was intentionally written to be more interesting than what would likely have happened to the typical soldier.

Now imagine pointing this out to anyone interested in historical films and telling them that by that argument they should compromise the historical accuracy of a film by doing shit that not only outright contradicts in a way that even the casual observer would be able to call bullshit, but also for not justifiable reason as the film would be perfectly interesting without doing so.

The idea of realism or something being realistic is that it is representing something true to life, if we go down that route then we run into the whole problem with soldiers being superhuman and being able to constantly come back from death. I wanted to stay here because this is a concrete definition, but if I re-read what you said then we're going the route of pseudo-realism, which makes this entire argument pointless because at that point we are just arguing our subjective philosophy on game design.

To elaborate, there can be fictional characters, but for them to be realistic they would have to follow the rules of reality, as in not respawning after death, or being superhuman. If you're asking me for a piece of media that I believe is realistic by my definition I would point to autobiographies and historical texts.

Depends on the country. For the UK, US and Germany there were strict rules - absolutely no women on the front lines. They had a role in WW2 but never any combat roles. Countries like Poland and Russia had females on the front lines, though obviously in far lesser numbers than males. So in conclusion, even a single female soldier fighting for the UK, US or Germany (which are prominently featured) is historically inaccurate.

If the events described by this paint on paper are true to our best known understanding of reality then it is realistic.

I'm not saying that they were many officially enlisted on the frontlines(from my small bit of research, there were some women who lied about their gender to get on the front lines), but most would find themselves there out of necessity. Maybe their village was being invaded and there just weren't enough men on hand, a few women would find themselves with weapons in hand. Stuff like that.

I'm not pretending that Battlefield V is true to life, and am well aware that the amount of women fighting in the game is vastly inflated. But I chalk it up to taking creative liberties with what happened in history rather than being full on incorrect with what happened. (As in, yes, there were, in rare cases, women fighting on frontlines, but not as many as portrayed in Battlefield V.)
