Most of the time it depends on what unique skills they have. Etna, for instance, has Sexy Beam and Chaos Impact for AoE damage, so giving her a spear is pretty redundant. I tend to give her axes instead. But with how much more versatile each weapon is in general in DIsgaea 5, and due to the sub-weapon system, I just gave everyone whatever I thought looked cool.

If you like seeing big numbers, the ability to level everything, farm out perfect equipment and turn generic units into gods by grinding it out with soundtracks that range from quirky beats to jamming beats along with a colorful cast of main characters( 2 and 3 nonwithstanding), with some having semi decent plots and character development(1), then you may enjoy.
My recommendations are 1, 2, and a choice between 4 or 5, as each of these showcase the refinement of the grinding process and have good casts. 3 is alright, but the leads suck, only the chef guy was cool. Raspberyl was a discount Etna, and Mao was a shitty Laharl.
If you enjoy none of the aforementioned reasons to play, this series is not for you

I dunno, I really liked Raspberyl. For one thing, she was the only character that played with the whole "demon high school" concept in an interesting way, since most of the game otherwise discarded it. Mao really is just Diet Laharl (though I like how his cameo appearances later in the series play up his mad scientist persona to differentiate him), Almaz is Diet Ash from Phantom Brave, and Sapphire is so bland she's Diet Water. But I enjoyed Raspberyl.

Being a discount Etna isn't a bad thing, as she was the best in the cast, but if I wanted Etna, id play a game with Etna in a leading role, namely 1 or 2. Which is my main gripe. The chef was at least his own thing, a crazy teacher who likes to cook shit, if i remember right, it couldnt finish the game due to how much i disliked Mao

I only finished Disgaea 3 because it was so damn short anyway, but I barely remember anything from it. Seriously, when Salvatore was added to DD2 as DLC I had no fucking idea who she was. I did have a lot of fun with the post-game, but after Disgaea 4 refined all the new features D3 introduced there really isn't a reason to go back to it.

I loved Disgaea 1 and beat everything in the post on both Etna and Laharl Mode at 20SEB, booted up 2 and disliked it immensely for its awful story, tried to do post but hated the Felony system. Is 3 worth trying?

No, it's the black sheep of the series along with Disgaea D2. You'll probably enjoy Disgaea 4, though. It's story still isn't quite as good as the first game's, but it's the second best.

4 is pretty alright, cast is still enjoyable and the story had some good moments. 5 is when things really started to get boring.

3 suffered due to its lackluster cast. 4 then turned that on its head by making the quirkyness of the characters front and center again, which only Raspberyl and the chef guy fulfilled in 3, redoing with 1 did with all the serious stuff as the player approaches the end of the games story. 2 gets away with the cast mostly being normal because they are also very likable, and the story was neat in its own way.

3 is alright but most aren't very fond of it, preferring 4 over it. Admittedly 4 polishes the mechanics better but story is kinda week in both games. 3's is all over the place but ends on a high note with the best villain in the series while 4 starts off entertaining and gets weaker each chapter in.

I tried the PS4 remaster of the first game and I didn't like it. Too many systems and mechanics to learn and I had no idea what I was doing. I kept trying until the game introduced the house of legislation or whatever but that marked the end of my patience and I gave up.
I may not have enjoyed her game, but I still hold to the fact that Etna and Lilith are the two sexiest video game characters ever.

It's a TRPG with a focus on fun unit building. Finding ways to make your units OP is the name of the game, ultimately, and stacking passives and other mechanics on top of each other is great fun as you discover new ways to buff/boost/level.

Also top tier cuties, among the best in the industry IMO.

I really liked 2. 1 is good as well, but I prefer 2. I played the absolute shit out of both of them on PSP. Emulate those two and see how you like them, PSP emulation has come a long way.

5 easily has the most dull story and characters in the series, but it's still my favorite to play thanks to all the quality of life improvements, new gameplay mechanics, and unit balancing. It's telling that I beat the new port of Disgaea 4 a little while ago, and once I hit the postgame I went right back to Disgaea 5 because I didn't want to deal with some of the busywork that D4 makes you go through.

3 is horrible and 5 is pretty bad. 4s good. DD2 is shit and its best to pretend it doesn't exist outside of Laharl-chan.

Go for it then. It might take a bit of work but the right gear and reincarnations can make that Thief capable of stealing items and lives.

I dunno, D4 has more random events and such than D5 does, but the amount of bullshit you have to do to get a max level item is fucking obscene. Remembering all that time spent resetting to get Innocent Towns and Mystery Floors and Reverse Pirating made me drop Disgaea 4 Complete+ once I hit the postgame. And good lord, Disgaea 4's Item World is ridiculous with Geo Effects all over the place. Every other goddamn floor has Invincibility and Mighty Enemy covering 90% of the panels, and Geo Blast couldn't get rid of them in that game. And sure, the Item World in 5 turns into a Land Decimator fest, but I think clearing out those stages is still more interesting than D4's method of having a Masked Hero use Triple Strike on the Gatekeeper, then have another one run to the gate.

Desco is in the main cast in 4, user. She was a cameo in 3 on Vita.

She's actually probably the easiest to abuse unit in the game for the main story. Her evilities let you surround her with any allies and passively buff her to immense levels. Since she's a Monster unit, she also receives buffs from the Beastmaster classes evility that buffs nearby ally Monsters.

4 isn't on PC but it is on the vita. Also I must add she joins your team at the start of the 4th chapter, so you'll have a little bit of time without her but she is good to go for the rest of the game.

It's as bad as any other strategy rpg but you can go full autism if you want to grind.

Initially it was Flonne, but currently the endgame is Etna, Flonne doesn't want to stay in the Netherworld and, to Etna, Laharl is becoming more and more like Krichevskoy who is the only person she truly respects.

However if you go off the mobile game, Etna and Flonne are basically dating, guess Laharl just grinds it out by himself.

I blame the flanderisation of the trio and the weird need they had to reset laharl in all sequels including DD2. Flonne and Laharl were really touching in D1 and the whole last fight can't be handwaved like that.

God I love all the DFC in this series.

DD2 is a totally different Laharl/Etna/Flonne anyway, plus the original Flonne wanted to go back to Celestia as soon as she became a Fallen Angel as well, that's why she becomes an Arch Angel in D4. Laharl/Flonne is either dead or totally one sided.
