Why did the Star Fox franchise fail?

Because there was only one good game, and it was just good for it’s time. Now no one knows whether they want something similar or different to Starfox 64 anymore.

Because they dropped the Assault ground gameplay right after it.

fairly accurate. all the other nintendo franchises kept pumping out the hits but star fox never went above 6/10

It had no legs to stand on.

Just robotic ones.

I literally just want more SF64 and they won't give it to me. Zero had the right idea by giving the series a focus on different vehicles and traversal, but they fucked it up with the story, the odd controls and the lack of content and replayability. There was an entire dune buggy vehicle that was super fun to drive around and it was stuck in two tiny challenge maps because the game was unfinished as fuck. Zero was one step forward and three steps back.

Because instead of making a more refined/evolved version of the gameplay mixture found in Assault, they doubled down on the on-rails shooting and kept trying to rehash Starfox 64.

I just wanted to add that SF is a fucking space game. All you need is a black skybox to place enemies in and you're finished, how the hell did Zero only have like, 5 decent levels?

Star Fox has infinite potential to be a bad ass space game in 2020, yet you don't see Nintendo or Miyamoto bringing any of the Mario or Zelda ideas to the table.

Makes me sad.

They don't really have a good direction with adapting it for a more modern audience. Assault likely was that, but they stopped going in that direction for whatever reason and doubled down on trying to rehash 64

Because it’s a franchise based on gimmicks
>3D on the SNES
>rumble pak
>stylus shit
>tilt controls shit
64 just happened to be an fun game with 10/10 aesthetics, presentation, and music.

What would a modern 2020/2021 Star Fox game look like? Elite Dangerous just more cartoony?

They stopped caring.

Shit is fucking boring. Hack devs that got lucky with the first game and repeated the same exact formula over and over to the point its not even fun. The games are too short, the gameplay is barebones, and it just isn't fun anymore.
And when they try something else with the series it bombs miserably because again, they're hacks

Maybe they should take a more Ace Combat/Colony Wars approach for some levels, and linear rails design for others.

Idk, seems they also can't seem to progress the story well either.

Wolf scared buyers away.

Miyamoto refuses to release a sequel to SF64 and instead demands that every new game revolve around some kind of gimmick

Rail shooters are a terrible investment-return prospect and the series never excelled beyond just being "okay" even at its best. There is literally nothing to be invested in, story included because half the series is the same one plot rebooted repeatedly. People only care because they played 64 as a kid and because of Smash.

Idea: The Star Fox team should become a sort of Voltron team.

All the Arwings can form together to be a Jehuty style Mecha. They can combine with the land vehicles for different mecha.

The core gameplay should still be space fighter combat like Xwing/tie fighter, however. Just add Gattai mechanics for special events. Could even fight an evil Star Wolf team in a mech.

Wolf is bi, Leon is gay, Panther is straight

Prove it.

I disagree. Adventure was a very good zelda-like and Assault was an extremely good multiplayer.

As a matter of fact if they released a version of Assault right now with online multiplayer it'd be a massive success.

Easy answer:

Miyamoto kept pushing for gimmicky Wii U controls.

It's why Zero failed. If Nintendo were wise enough to pull a BOTW and delay Zero long enough to rework the controls to fit the Switch, it wouldn't have just been successful, it would've made the Switch's launch even better.

But nope, they had to beat a dead horse and shoehorn the Wii U GamePad one last time.

Leon swooning over Wolf in Smash
Panther constantly flirting with Krystal and getting together with her
The secret alternate ending to Command where Fox, Wolf and Krystal are in a relationship

No, I mean show me their dicks. I can tell by looking at them.

Star Fox is gay

This is a SFW board.

Just make it like the Rogue Squadron games, I don't get what's so hard. Yeah on-rails was fine, but clearly isn't enough for a modern game. Different vehicles, vehicle types, AI partners, maybe customization or online play. There's a 8/10 game at the minimum.

is polygamy allowed in star fox

>shoehorn the Wii U GamePad
Worst part is that they didn't even shoehorn the cooler aspects of the dpad such as the touch screen or the fact that it could feed a different angle or point of view of the same events.

No. It had to be the fucking Gyro controls because shiggy mijji actually expects you to fling around the whole thing for hours.

It's a franchise he just needs to let free from his hands.

> canned Star Fox 2 in favor of focus on n64 hardware
> likely not personal and not in his control but Nintendo stiffed Argonaut shortly afterwards
> has rareware pull a massive turn on Dinosaur Planet force feeding Star Fox characters into it
> no proper sequel in favor of soft rebooting the series countless time

The fact that we got an official non-beta release of Star Fox 2, even if it was 'limited', baffles me.

Star Fox is honestly the most boring fucking Nintendo series ever I'm surprised it didnt end after 64.

Same thing that fucked Metroid and F-Zero: If you like sci-fi then why would you look for work an Nintendo of all places?

>Nintendo doesn't like Sci-fi
Finally, I'm not the only one who's noticed that.

it failed because the original game was set up as an arcade shooter and thats what people loved. the subsequent games were all over the place meanwhile they already had the winning formula

Because they didn’t make an Adventures sequel, dooming them to fail.

> has rareware pull a massive turn on Dinosaur Planet force feeding Star Fox characters into it
Are people really still believing this? On the board where half the posters religiously watch zoomer youtube e-celebs who have covered this topic to death already? Dinosaur Planet was largely unchanged from its original concept to the final result. Most of the NPC voice acting stayed the same, and the story was going to end in the same “Whoops, General Scales jobs to the REAL ultimate evil at the last second!” plot twist. Shoving Star Fox characters into the game at the very least saved it from Microsoft’s hands in the end, who would have just let the Dinosaur Planet IP rot in their vaults like they’ve done with pretty much every other Rare creation they acquired.

>people want a game in the same vein as rogue squadron
>hey let's make a poorly made remake of the same fucking game on the N64

Miyamoto killed the series by not releasing Starfox 2 back in 1996.
Then he killed doubly it by mashing Dinosaur Planet into a starfox game.
Then he tripply killed it by making Starfox Zero instead of simply rolling with the series mess he created with Adventure and that Namco salvaged with Assault.

necrophilia is allowed tho

They didn't expand on Assault and at their first stumble (Command) they retracted back into 64 nostalgia.

It was largely adjusted to accommodate for both Star Fox characters/story and gameplay segments.

If you watch the footage of the n64 version it's clearly similar in design but obviously was changed between then and the gamecube release.

I just want more Assault. Ground gameplay made everything feel more hectic, being able to seamlessly fight in the sky, jump out of the cockpit and onto the ships wing to shoot shoot people with you heavy machinegun, and do strafing runs on enemy's below or grabbing a rocket launcher and watching the orange rocket trail chase enemy fighters across the sky.
Fuck the people who said ground gameplay doesn't belong in Starfox.

Because the developers failed to recognize the true strength of Star Fox 64 being the perfect movie game. Think about it for a moment:
>takes about an hour to beat same amount of time as it takes to watch a movie
>your choices and competence ACTUALLY matter for your experience where failing the mission doesn't mean fail stating the game, it just puts you down a different path
>distinct environments and fully voice acted unique characters. You can tell the voice actors are giving it their all and delivering cheesy lines with so much zeal you find them believable.
>crisp, unobtrusive gameplay
The modern day development cycle would shun such a game structure though. The player has to see everything on their first playthrough in the current mindset and can't hide completely new stages and characters behind casual filters. If they actually decided to keep these strengths then Star Fox could be a strong franchise.

Assault sucked donkey dick; fuck off with this meme

Starfox is a Bucky o hare ripoff. Fight me

No there are only 2 good games.
Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox Assault.

oh nononono
Are you going to play the "Zero was a better game" card or the "Starfox only had one good game" card next?

I think the problem is deeper than Nintendo not liking sci-fi. Starfox, F-Zero and Metroid are all relics of a different time. Imagine if those series weren't published by Nintendo and instead belonged to someone like Capcom or Konami. Would those series have stuck around for the n64 and gamecube, or would they have bailed for the Playstation like everyone else did?

Dare I say based?

64 is easily as good today as it was back then.

It's damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you took Miyamoto out of the picture you wouldn't get a Starfox game without gimmicks. You just wouldn't get one at all because Miyamoto is the only person who still cares enough to push for a new one.

I can't see bucky (or starfox) working in 2020.

Guess there's only room for one fuzzy, pilot around these space parts.

>fell for the remake meme and died too
No, space shall remain void.
