Military builds a lot of things. The entire US highway system exists due to military requirements, and army engineers built three of the five biggest dams in the country. Lots of canal digging and base building too.

Then there's military science, aka studying how to kill better, which often leads to technology with civilian applications. Though this stuff is pretty damn far from what regular soldiers do, and mostly handled by milind corps, it's still worth mentioning.

When I went through it at Fort Benning we wore full battle rattle with rifles throughout the entire training cycle. I'm not sure if they still do this, most drill sergeants there are/were infantry. They were pretty hardcore and any even slight misuse of them was met with knife hands, berating, and strictly timed sprints with your full battle rattle on. So ~16 weeks of that.
Years later, I heard that people who trained at Fort Jackson only did weapons immersion during FTX3, so they only had one week of wearing all that shit and handling weapons. It makes sense that weapon discipline isn't instilled in them.

There were previous house numbering systems in various places, but all used different standards. Having the number be the distance from the end of the street was fairly popular, but meant a lot of skipping numbers. Another popular one was giving numbers in the order houses were built. The republican army did away with those and instituted the system we know today. Why exactly they choose to have evens and odds on different sides is a mystery to me, but this is how it got popularised.
