ff6 is an amazing and timeless experience. FF7 was good but a meme.

(((goty)))

FF7 was a huge downgrade & honestly a fairly mediocre game, journalists hated it & it’s only praise came from literally popularity polls held by websites at the time since it was the first 3D FF game

This, It was the most groundbreaking rpg of all time. And still is, it’s sense of scope, pacing & character development have never been topped

you're retarded

FF6 was a legit good game

FF7 was largely liked due to it being technically impressive for the time, the gameplay was a complete downgrade and the story is a mess that SE is even unsure of to this day

Attached: burn.jpg (604x349, 48K)

FF7 lost goty to what is considered the most outdated classic of all time (GoldenEye)
FF6 won goty against what is considered a top 5 game of all time (Super Metroid)

FF7 was never a good game. Not then, not now

goldeneye is more fun to play in 2020 than FF7

The fact that FF7 had to be completely remade from the ground up to even be playable now, while Ff6 & OOT are still praised as masterpieces by zoomers should answer your question

FF7 shows you all of the good parts within the first four hours, from Midgar to Kalm is great. The problem is everything afterwards is irredeemable dogshit, it’s why the FF7 remake is so misleading. Square knew exactly what they were doing by remaking it episodically, sell people on the only good part of the game & milk it for all its worth. Then by the time people experience the rest of the game in two years & realize it’s shit it will be too late. You think they would be doing this episodic shit if FF7 was actually a good game from start to finish? Of course not

>technically impressive for the time

meh, I don't know about that. The first oddworld came out the same year, had a fraction of the budget and the cutscenes still hold up today, they even got an award for it, and the in game graphics have held up far better than 7's lego men, which was a ponderous artistic choice even for the time. Everything about 7 reeks of being rushed and laziness. I think it was just marketing hype and the fact it seemed new to most westerners at the time that sold it, similar to persona 5.

Attached: ;lk;lksdf;lsdkf;ldksf.jpg (1280x720, 92K)

the scope of oddworld is, maybe, the extent of midgar

FF7 was never technically impressed, games like Goldeneye, SM64, Ocarina, FF7, Tekken 3 & Half Life were. FF7 always looked outdated.

delicious, user

Attached: licky licky.gif (500x500, 258K)

I thought that's why they were remaking it. To fix it. But it really goes to show they've always been lazy and incompetent when it comes to this series. Similar to how nintendo is lazy when it comes to Zelda.

it has about the same amount of cutscenes, much better quality in textures, etc, tons of voice acting, better sound quality, better directing and pacing.

FF7 literally looked & played like shit, it was pathetic considering that FF6 & Chrono Trigger came out years prior. It was a huge downgrade, those games pushed 2D gaming too the limit. Ocarina & SM64 pushed early 3D gaming to the limit, during the foundation period. FF7 was a mediocre tech demo, it wasn’t until FF9 that everyone got the dream 3D FF game they invisioned. The scores mirrored this since it had a 96 at the time which was a huge leap from FF7’s 92 & FF8’s 90. But the sales dropped due to how awful FF8 was & normies being used to realism trash in terms of graphics.

Who decides what goty is?

FF6 was a labor of love done by seasoned veterans who were pros at working with the hardware at the time.

FF7 was an attempt to recapture the magic of what FF6 accomplished on new hardware with a less experienced team trying to best utilize new technology, it was historically important in that it really pushed FF into the mainstream but wasn't original at all and as a result of mainstream exposure was a lot of people's first FF experience so therefore it was the "best" for them.

He's right. Even earlier FFs were technically pretty underwhelming. Games like CT look far superior to ff6. And later offerings like chrono cross look far better than any FF from that era. Square has always been weirdly deficient with their flagship series for some reason.

Back in the day there were no awards, simply top 100 goat lists that came put at the end of the year. FF6 was the #1 RPG on every list at the time, whereas it took a couple years before people realized how good Super Metroid was

FF9 is shit deal with it furfag. 7 was good, and 8 was okay but 9 is legit trash.

Horseshit! FF6 came out the same time as Mega man X, Earthworm Jim, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid and lots of other games that beat the shit out of it because RPGs weren't popular in the west yet. Because FF7 wasn't out yet.

It did win RPG of the year pretty much everywhere though. Poor Star Control 2...

Anyway 6 is godly and I wish they'd give it a remake. I need to see narshe in 3D before I die.

Who makes the lists though?

Creator of Final Fantasy doesn’t even think FF7 is better than FF9, and after he left the series went to complete shit.

highest rated FF alongside 6, the other best in the series COPE

Holdover from early days of the internet. FF7 was a recent release and was unbelievably popular while FF6 was a much rarer game to have been played. It created this elitist subgroup shilling for FF6 as what REAL FF fans preferred, while FF7 was the normie choice.

People still doing it in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ 2020 are just pathetic faggots though.

At the time you had like 13 journalists in America, Famitsu & by 1996 there was GameFaqs with its huge influx of gamers

>highest rated 3D FF
>sakaguchi's favorite
>uematsu's favorite
>despite going out of its way to be more layed back, still more challenging than 7 or broken ass junction shit in 8
get fucked fag

Attached: chad.png (300x200, 67K)

9 is very clearly tialored towards a certain type of mindset. I wish to liken it to that of weird manchildren but I don't want to come down on it too hard. Anyway if you liked the more mature tone of 6, 7 and 8 you probably shouldn't like 9.

FF6 was so huge Nintendo themselves had to put it in their list of top 10 games to ever appear on a Nintendo platform

Dragon Force almost made owning a Saturn worth it.

>9 is very clearly tialored towards a certain type of mindset
yeah, classic FF fans. I like 6 too, 7 and ESPECIALLY 8 are inferior because of their inferior gameplay and nonsense stories

don't you have some gay furry bara shit to look up user? you don't have to samefag this hard to defend your turd.

Come on, 9 has the worst gameplay. That's not even up for debate.

quit projecting faggot

9 is tailored towards FF fans
7 and 8 dragged the series towards this weird sci-fi flavour that alienated people

All I can say in favor of VII is that it was the first FF to introduce dynamic camera movements/angles into combat, which doesn't do a thing for gameplay, but makes it look more exciting and "cinematic". So it had that going for it.

FF6 & FF9 are the only games with good world building, character development, good pacing, well written antagonists, compelling & coherent plot, satisfying ending in the entire franchise. The slow combat animations are it’s only flaw

9 has superior dungeons and level design to 7 and especially 8, its combat is the same shit as 7 but somehow 7 is even easier and 8's combat is a disaster with junctioning. 7 is also filled to the brim with shit mini games whereas 9 has fewer of them in the main game and are less offensive

That's all hindsight. RPGs did not get big numbers in the west before FF7 and Pokémon. Even Square can't believe how people have such fond memories of Chrono Trigger now because it totally bombed outside of Japan and wasn't even released in Europe.

9 had a third the cast of 6 and couldn't develop more than 3 of them. 1 of which (the main fucking character) gets all his development at the ass end of the game.

>almost
2 is translated also.

Attached: spoiler.jpg (2016x1512, 528K)

FF6 grossed 800 million

>FF9fags defend SUDDENLY NECRON
>horrid load times
>slowest battles of the series
>ugliest models and textures on PS1
>terrible story
>disney looking character designs, probably kindom heartsfags
>plagued with awful minigames (99/100 nobles impressed) chocobo hot and cold, jump rope, hippo racing, worse card game than ff8
>excalibur II unlock method
>unlikable bland cast
>only good character (beatrix) is never a full on party member
>awful skill growth system that just tried to copy FF6's Esper system and failed
>terrible OST
>nothing but throwbacks "HEY REMEMBER THIS THING FROM OLDER FF GAME" is family guy cutaway gag tier of cringe and unoriginal
>so bad Square had to partner with Coca-Cola to cross promote the game
>worst selling of the PS1 FFs

too bad. square hates it. I'd prefer a 9 or 10 remake if we're being honest.

You're right but fucking FF6 came out in 94 and CT in 96, back then, even two years made a lot of difference, just look at fucking FF4, same goes for Cross (came out in 2000 IIRC) which is probably one of the 5 best looking games on the PS1, along with Vagrant Story Crash 3, etc...

8's combat has variety and flexibility. Just because you're a dumbass who spent all afternoon drawing 100 every spell instead of refining them like a normal person doens't mean that's all you can do. You get lots of ninfty abilities from the GFs.

9 is totally rigid on-rail and repeat playthroughs doesn't change a damn thing. By the time you finally get to deck out your characters with cool shit from the chocobo minigame, the game's basically over, and unlike 10 there's no beefy endgame.

>9 is totally rigid on-rail and repeat playthroughs doesn't change a damn thing.
except for the fact that you can prioritize different skills with equipment and focus on different party members

8's combat suffers from rewarding people not levelling and just abusing junctions

Usually it was left up to the magazines themselves, very rarely newspapers would give anything positive to say about games, mostly due to the witch hunt over violence. E3 mostly just showcased upcoming games and tech.
Nintendo Power, being the closest thing the US had to an official representation, actually did keep track of sales, usually on the first few pages they had a listing of what game was selling the best.
Additionally, keep in mind the fact that for every JRPG that came out, four to five never were ported, and almost every WRPG either lacked proper polish or was extremly clunky, usually due to being a port/downgrade of a PC game, even a fair number of games had an issue of sticking to an "arcade" mind set. making losing exceedingly easy. Many western games that did have a way to record progress used passwords (even up to the early N64/PSX era) rather than battery backed saves due to costs.

Is there any fanbase worse than FF9fags? I'd say FF15 but it literally has exactly one fan, and I'm pretty sure FF2 is universally reviled for how awful it is.

>tfw 5 and 6 are in the C U C K shed atm with only a very VERY shitty-looking "mobile" piece of shit port.

It's not fucking fair...

Attached: 1582226997518.png (683x683, 547K)

The only reason FF9 didn’t win goty is because it had to compete with the most loaded year in gaming aside from 1998, there were 15 95+ rated games that year & The Sims which revolutionized gaming. Majora’s Mask didn’t even get a single nomination that year, a fucking Zelda game. FF7 was by far the most advertised game of 1997, and Goldeneye, Tekken 3 & Gran Turismo was its only competition, and it still lost & was reviewed far lower than them

No you fucking can't. Your party is set for the first two discs. Did you even play 9?

More like rewarding cheaters for looking up exploits online and then complaining about how easy something is.

>sakaguchi's favorite
The man was responsible for Spirits Within, this does NOT help your case any.

>Your party is set for the first two discs
no? you get everyone aside from amarant and can freely choose between them most of the time

>Majora’s Mask didn’t even get a single nomination that year, a fucking Zelda game.
It's because it's one of the worst Zelda's ever made, it's half baked using OoT leftovers and only has 4 dungeons and forced you to play as kid Link which nobody liked, also the time system was widely hated.

Nintendo Power & Electronic Gaming Monthly were the official journalist publications for the west. In 1997 it became Gamefaqs, Gamespot & IGN as the homes for gaming

he was responsible for your precious ff7/8 too faggot

Not the point, Critics have favoritism to Zelda. Skyward Sword got nominations in the same year as Skyrim. The fact that not even reviewer bias could help Majora Mask proves how strong of a year it was

So that's a no, then? By the time you get amarant, steiner and freya are on a different continent. Oh, you want to use the characters you've been using up until now? Nope.

Must've been thinking of the sequel, which was also shorter than I remembered.

Anyways, it's still impressive they managed to make alien tmnt turd monsters endearing and kind of cute and likable, whereas square took a perfectly attractive young girl design and somehow managed to mangle and regurgitate this.... thing.

Attached: lkjklvmxklvmxc.png (112x254, 17K)

Tekken, Gran Turismo & GoldenEye pushed the boundaries of their genre. FF7 popularized movie games with streamlined features To emphasis graphical whoring

You're overthinking it. Skyward Sword is an excellent game at long last legitimizing the wiimote while Majora's Mask is a tepid rehashed rushed piece of shit.

It also didn't help it needed the expansion pak, and if you didn't get it from say DK64, then that was an additional expense on top of an already expensive $60+ Nintendo game.

MM is the FF8 of Zelda

All Final Fantasy ever needed was FF5 gameplay with FF6 story/characters

>it doesn't count because you can't use them for a bit
wow you really swayed my opinion

FF7 won goty in Japan, the only country that mattered at the time.

That makes no sense because the expansion pack in DK64 was to delay a glitch of unknown origin that inevitably caused the game to crash. Did MM have that same glitch?

Shut your whore mouth

hello? based department?

Attached: burn.png (784x514, 36K)

Die, retard. Until the very end of disc 2 you don't get ANY say over your party composition. Not even once.

good job proving you didn't play the game tard

They should have made Final Fantasy VI-2: War of the Magi long ago. It's a prequel to the main series set 1000 years before, I don't know why they haven't realized this yet. For example, one of the generals from a thousand years ago could have had a striking resemblance to Terra of the future, that's why Tritoch immediately attacked Terra when he/she/it first encountered her in Narshe mines.

Imagine this, a scene from the past, Tritoch was to meet evil Terra into signing a truce, but it was actually a trap. Tritoch was led into a deep canyon where he/she/it can't maneuver or escape. But general Terra from the past couldn't defeat Tritoch of the rebels, so Terrato, one of evil Terra's commanders, sacrificed himself to help seal Tritoch. With evil general Terra's seal magic and Terrato's might, they were able to defeat Tritoch with enough power to topple a mountain. Can you imagine that as a CG cutscene. FUCKING HELL!

Attached: custom potraits 2.jpg (2671x1080, 2.07M)

DK64 needed it because it overran the rdram, MM presumably needed it for the day system to help keep track of where everyone was and draw distance for the moon.

While they both are themed around the industrial revolution, VI is more focused on preventing WW2 while VII is more concerned about the impact we're having on the environment.

The problem with this is that VI is the one where the world turns into a barren wasteland, while VII is the one fixed by deus ex machina. VI's story is solid on every front but VII has a lot of parts where you have to flash the retard alert. Especially fucking everything related to Sephiroth.

Attached: unnamed.jpg (512x381, 80K)

Famitsu’s goty was Tekken 3 (1997)

I wouldn't call it a deus ex machina, the white materia was presented and a goal for the party. You're right on the other stuff

They should have finished Xenogears & called it FF7 instead. The series would be so much better off now

it's cool, the result was xeno not being dragged down by the rest of SE's shit

Because FF7 kind of sucked compared to Square's SNES library, and was memed into popularity between Sony throwing money at advertising the cinematic FMVs as gameplay and 1997's version of stupid kids who gobble up AAA garbage?

So Aerith dies and becomes part of the lifestream so she can use the white materia to save the planet or what?

some shit like that, I don't think square even knows fully with shit like 3 different nibelheims

7 carried the scope of a 3D adventure not seen before unless you played OOT. Or Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. It basically sold itself and legitimized the RPG genre in the west.

Or 100 different Sephiroth clones. Apparently Sephiroth (the human) dies 5 years before the game starts; so much for that personal vendetta. He's already a corpse.

I thought he just become encased in the crystal in the north snow area

Symphony of the Night
Goldeneye

His corpse was. Every sephiroth you interact with until the final "battle" is just jenova, and by then he's probably jenova too.

Tomb Raider 2 and Quake 2 came out for the PS1 the same year as FF7, you cannot tell me that people liked it because of how "technically impressive" it was.

was it a corpse? or did the black materia bring him back to life?

ff7 story is so meh. at least it has cool anime characters

I wish. I'd watch an anime about Barret. Or "Jax" as I used to name him because what the fuck is a Barret? Did they mean beret?

Attached: Barret-ffvii-battle.png (402x463, 64K)

>famitsu
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Game_of_the_Year_awards#Japan_Game_Awards_(formerly_CESA_Awards)

Famitsu is the home for gaming in Japan, their top rated game was Tekken 3

Sure, if by "scope of 3D adventure", you mean "walking on top of a static pre-rendered background instead of tiled sprites". And even then that wasn't something new, it was already being done in PC games a couple years prior. May as well say that Donkey Kong Country was a new scope of 3D adventure.

Government created awards are more significant than journos opinions.

It means bullet. They're transliterated the same way in Japanese.

Most likely because of minigun barrel on his hand?

Despite all the shit FFVII gets for the lego-tier field models, the in battle models were actually pretty good at the time, if only Square could've found a way to have the PS1 run the game with the battle models at all times.

>Even Square can't believe how people have such fond memories of Chrono Trigger
Square calling faggots out for lying about playing a game to fit in.

Yeah. CT is super fucking overrated because it's the most braindead, easy-to-play SNES game ever so it has mass appeal.

The Playststion was capable of pulling off 3D in a pretty convincing fashion, you just had to get creative in overcoming some of its perceived limitations. Here's an excellent video from the creator of Crash explaining all the shit they had to do just to get the game to look and run like it does.

Yup, that's another Square masterpiece they could atleast update (aka. add more content on that disc 2), but the cost of making a spectacle has risen to movie making levels now. Shoot, why did vidya development get this bloated in budget requirements?

it isn't, square is the only one obsessed with high budget shit when it comes to jRPGs. Even monolithsoft with its games far larger in scope than square's has had its head refer to the games as budget titles

>1 of which (the main fucking character) gets all his development at the ass end of the game
You're retarded if you think that. You're right about not all of the cast getting proper story arcs though

There's a great open world randomizer for FFVI now. Lets you switch back and forth between WOB and WOR at will.
