I don't have a hateboner for VR like some people do and I hope it geniuanly becomes common(which will also make it more affordable), but so far there hasn't been a single good VR game released. Every single release has been a gimmick. The closest to a good game is Skyrim VR and it's just a new control scheme which doesn't work well(still the best of any VR game tho) on an old game. Maybe Alyx will change it but it looks just as gimmicky. buying a piece of dedicated hardware to play a few games isn't worth it

The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is the release of Hammer with Alyx. It could lead to a second coming of the HL modding scene. Imagine mods like Dystopia or NeoTokyo in VR. Or whole new VR mods. I don't care if Alyx is shit. It looks kind of boring and linear compared to Boneworks. But the mod support will give it legs.

No. Alyx is designed for VR. You can not program to simulate for every nuance the human body is capable of. Or you end up with Surgeon Simulator. Which was janky on purpose.

Everything is possible but don't expect the same fidelity, it's probably just gonna be a rough port of Source 2 maps to Source 1 with HL2 enemies.

I reckon the world, the physics, NPCs, ect do not rely on the game being in VR (Yes, there may be puzzles which were designed to be solved in VR, but let us charitably assume that it should be possible to substitute a key-and-mouse solution). So, could it not be possible to mod the game such that you play as a traditional FPS avatar? With mouse too look and shoot, E to interact ect?

Testers have found that having Arms can create less immersion istead of more, thats at least what hardware people in VR scene have said, could be damage control because they can't get the physics to work right but I doubt that is it because they have gotten harder things to work.

There will probably be actual body parts when Haptic gear becomes accessible and affordable.

It is, and in fact the player has invisible arms to prevent impossible situations like putting your hand in a locker and closing the door, but current Valve VR design philosophy is to not have visible arms since it can be immersion breaking of the view and reality become too far off; Boneworks for example has some problems with its visible full body.

No. No animation or key press can compensate for the real deal motions of human arms. You can't just press a button and play a canned animation when the game fundamentally wants you to hold up objects, keep them in place, drag the object places and so on. Valve could possibly make an entire separate game using Alyx assets but there is no way they would do that when they could just make an entire other game.

Valve are absolute bullshiters. The only reason Alyx even has locomotion is that Boneworks thoroughly pushed Gaben's shit in when they showed it to Valve in development. Either Valve has an extremely limited and retarded pool of testers or they just crossed their arms and turned up their nose to the data until the very last minute.
