The first time Rouge and Knuckles met it was established that Eggman got a radar that picks emerald signals, so when Tails brough the last remaining emerald to the ARK along with the fake emerald he created, which possess the same wavelenghts as the original one (remember that his radar is capable of capturing even the master emerald's signal, so it's not restricted to just real chaos emeralds) he figured that one of them has to be fake, since Eggman already has 6 of the 7 emeralds, now it was just a matter of figuring out which one is real and which one is fake, therefore he captured Amy Rose in order to exchange her for the emerald, acting like he doesn't know about the existence of the fake one, Sonic and Tails didn't predict his plans and thought they could kill two birds with one stone by handing him the fake emerald and then putting that fake into the console which would blow the eclipse cannon, things got a turn for the worse however since Eggman trapped Sonic and revealed he knew about the existence of a fake, mind you however that he still did not know which emerald Sonic was going to hand him so this is all a bluff, unfortunately Tails spilled his beans by asking how Eggman knew the emerald Sonic had was a fake, little did Tails know he signed Sonic's name on the death note with that line as it revealed to Eggman that Sonic's emerald was indeed a fake, so he cast Sonic into space and killed his 10 year long rival once and for all, long live the eggman empire.
