Is there any reason why preindustrial societies (usually some european medieval society) is so appealing to gamers?

Because gaming is a particularly unproductive surrogate activity, and even people who really enjoy games and don't know Ted's work can sense it
Ah yes. I too read the works of the naturalists during the industrial revolution in Europe.
Because they are miserable losers and outcasts longing for a utopia elsewhere that never was
Because modernity is globohomo bullshit
Swords are cool
Chivalry is cool

Swords are gay, spear master race.
muh tolkien
Spears are superior for fighting, but the sword is more aesthetic.
Both are inferior to macechads, of course.
Right? Because war disease and famine prematurely killing off 50-75% of each generation is so much cooler than the comfort and abundance of recent times
Shit reach and only useful against armored foes.
I only like them in games.
As a modern man I enjoy loving in a world of medicine, surplus food, porn, technology, understanding, indoor climate control, and most of all soap.
However, fantasy settings provide a world that still has things left to be discovered, ancient mysteries to solve, and the delusion that fighting orcs goblins dragons and skeletons is fun rather than absolutely terrifying.
It is purely escapism, I would rather have a hot shower than get shanked by some knife eared green skin for a side of beef.
I only like them as simulations, like mini-vacations into the past, and even then I vastly prefer sci-fi.
For me? It has to be the Halbard.
Okay, we will all bludgeon you while you are unarmored and see if your bones turn out any less broken.
his problem was with american society and vapid consumerism, not necessarily industrialised society as a whole. had he the travel experience he probably would've realised that the problems he believed plagued humanity was not necessarily global but rather localised within the united states, and more a problem with the nation's own sociopolitical and economic philosophies, rather than the technologies they utilized.
all the shit with "surrogate activities" was literally all over-generalization and sourceless assertions to make it seem like his beliefs were more profound and unique than that of a more standard anti-american anarchist, one who could be easily demonized by the government and press.

The irony is that the most popular pseudo-medieval fantasy settings have so much magic and pseudo-magic that if the setting was written consistently most of the population would have much better living standards than IRL medieval europe, and in some cases even better than what we have today (magic allows for immortality, healing severe injuries, remote communication, all sorts of superpowers, teleportation, etc.)
> the delusion that fighting orcs goblins dragons and skeletons is fun rather than absolutely terrifying.
Not that terrifying when someone can heal any injury or literally raise you from the dead for a fraction of the amount of gold you can find lying around in one of the thousands of dungeons in the setting.
>fighting orcs goblins dragons and skeletons is fun rather than absolutely terrifying.
this made me laugh a lot. goddamn. but yeah, bumping into literally any videogame creature that isnt human irl would be so fucking mindbreaking and heart attack inducing. makes me want a game that is ery immersive and realistic as possible, that eventually makes you confront something like a monster and feel the shock and fear of just catching a glimpse of something that isnt normal. i want a game that can give you that moment and the feels. something similar to that scene in the movie signs where an alien was caught on camera for a second and it was bloody terrifying
yea
its based
Trump should pardon him, desu.
>Not even 6'0"
Must've been an incel.
No reason other than "i'm unhappy now despite all the luxuries but i probably wouldn't be unhappy if i were a dumb poor farmer full of parasites"
ball and chain/flail is the most based weapon of all time
And they are correct in thinking so. Nowadays, incels don't even get a malnourished womanlet wife to abuse at home.
Yeah, in games adventurers go out and find loot because if there wasn't gold to find the player probably wouldn't do it. It's a convenient fantasy to facilitate the gameplay. Take DnD, every commoner is a CR0 with less than 20 HP and +0 mods in everything. This is your reality, the average person would die horribly and probably make like 2 gold a week.
And frankly you are assuming a lot that someone even finds your remains soon enough to raise you, or at all. Pain is still real, you are still fighting monsters much more stronger and nimble then you. Assuming you would be badass of you didn't have a smartphone or soap is the dumbest shit ever, you would likely be the same unmotivated piece of shit, the town drunk who makes a living scooping cow shit around.
I definitely concede that QoL if better in fantasy settings but in most settings you don't have a magician on every street corner and have to pay 4 months salary to get the healing you need except there is no insurance.
