I never played that kind of game before but I just finished a run on true believer, if it's hard pick the +dex girl, buy a hammer at the seaside warehouse and build up your dex. Prep a strong attack and dodge until you can take down your enemy in a last round with prep s.attack prep attack.
As you build up your dex and get the faster offensive action perk you will be able to prepare multiple strong attacks and even dodge.
Get to know the mysteries well and you'll be able to do them in an order that benefit you.

The hammer is an STR weapon now. That's literally it. It's not that big of a deal and you can just use the steak knife instead if you're playing as Aiko or the scalpel if you're playing as Mimi or Kirie.

What are your must get items on your play throughs?
I usually try to get Compass, map, flashlight, and either Kendo or Ritual Mask

hammer and what I can find in the pharmacy is usually good enough for finishing the game.
Sometime I grab the flashlight if I can afford doom.
I always starts by taking a bath for exp and recruiting an ally too.

Compass and flashlight for sure, I will re-roll items to get flashlight.
Map I'm kinda iffy on, I'll take it if it shows up first but its effect is such a low chance and otherwise it's only helpful for a couple of random events.

Holy Candles will usually offset the doom cost of visiting the shop and avoid a a bad outcome for the events they're involved in, plus 1 point in luck just for being in the inventory and the option to use them for 2 Reason in case of emergency, they're really neat.

How do I fix Direct3D issues with Wine? Is this an issue with DirectX or with OpenGL? It's so weird with Crimson Cape and Scissor Woman, and so are any of the investigations where not confronting the monster or whatever danger at all is the best choice in the long run.

The game is pretty much the same on the easier modes and you really have to be stupid to fuck that one up.

There's a single achievement for beating the game on hard mode right now, everything else is exactly the same no matter the difficulty you choose.

It plays more like a board game than a roguelike, really. Comparisons to Arkham Horror or Betrayal at House on the Hill are more accurate than any typical roguelike.

I very much doubt he was fully awake when he burnt down Alexandria. The fact that the mere threat of Ithotu even starting to awaken causes solar rays to grow monumentally more potent alongside other cosmic phenomena is miles above most of the Old Gods bar Ath-Yolazsth.

We also have no idea how Ithotu ended up in the statue. It could be a Goizo situation where some advanced precursor civ sacrificed themselves to seal it away. I doubt the statue is simply as old as Greece.

A lot of cases require you to do the side shit to get to the best endings.

Depends on the case, a good chunk of them require you to do the sidequest to get the good ending (ie ramen), give you clues when you do it (ie manor) or just fuck you over and damage you (ie eels). Pretty sure doing them gives you an extra 15 exp at the end of the case though.

Need to have it filled out at the hospital for 4 funds first. You won't get a prompt or an item, just use it in the pharmacy IIRC and it'll vanish along with the money. Then head to the den and you'll get a cutscene.

How do you do STR characters in this? I tried using the crowbar and attacking took so many points I could barely even dodge, though granted I was playing camera boy. Really I'm struggling with the combat system in general (except for when I play hammer girl)

I'm not getting the vigil quest. I'm inspecting the toe and following the pamphlet but the body always disappears at midnight so I can't pray and I don't know how to cover the mirror.

I'm literally doing this right now, you just have to do the first ritual, burn the note(not sure if it has to be done without reading it), note the symbol from earlier and then later on carve the symbol.

You're already doing what you should be doing--the body leaves no matter what. You just need to make sure to do the prayer correctly, then check Uncle's toe for the symbol. When the whole house goes to shit there should be an option to draw a sigil on the ground--that's your ticket.

What is the correct order to do mysteries? So far I've only noticed that you need to do Long Arms first, so you'll have a Tiny Key which allows you to get a weapon from a locked school locker in Scissors later.

I want eldritch horrors that actually feel eldritch. Not just big creepy-crawlies, but truly abstract horrors like Lovecraft's Colour out of Space, Algernon Blackwood's 'beings' in 'The Willows' (which directly inspired the former), or even an infohazard a la SCP-033 (rogue integer that literally disintegrates conventional mathematical systems) and SCP-140 (extinct human subspecies trying to retroactively change history through written media).

i try to do mermaid, manto and scissors last when they show up. although i like having the gun or scissors early, but its still like 2 guaranteed fights

Prioritize missions that don't have bosses or mandatory fights so you can use the time to build up your character.

There is no correct order, just start with whatever will give you the biggest boost going into other investigations.
My preference is: Eels always first, but if it isn't around just any easy Investigation that lets you buy shit, then any that involve the forest or mansion in case of the roads getting closed, then everything else.

I hope theres a bigger focus on actually detecting and solving shit for best case endings in future updates, in many of them all you have to do is do the side quest and then select the new option.

Can someone give me a quick rundown of what each character is supposed to be good at? I know they all have a stat that's better than others, but does it actually translate to being able to handle combats? I noticed there's a scalpel that doesn't scale on STR/DEX so I'm wondering if everyone has an option according to their stats. You'll have to play it by ear considering what you have and your plans for your character, but I'd generally do Eels before anything else (Kana is just that useful), then probably Arms because it's so easy, then ones like Vigil or Festival since you're likely to get into fights but they're usually fairly easy, then missions where you need to discard items such as Seaside or Ramen because you'll have some trash items in your inventory by then, then finally the ones with beefy boss fights like Scissors, Mermaids or Red Cape. Basically, you want to cut your teeth on the softball mysteries and gain some levels before things get serious. Again, you'll want to play that by ear, though; I think a big part of getting good at the game is getting a feel for that sort of thing.
