there is no clear-cut consensus

Only complete retards play paradox games. Even their older stuff was just baby's first pc wargame. At least es is a solid 4x.

stellaris is a great game to play while having something going on in a second monitor. like a giant interactive 4x fish tank with loads of branching narratives and possibilies.

endless space 2 is more like really complicated board game.

depends what you want really.

I play both.
Burned myself out with both.
Hoping the federations expansion is good.

>endless space 2 is more like really complicated board game.
That's what 4x is supposed to be.

I really love the idea of an inbetween real time and auto resolve.
Auto resolve is too straight forward and automated while real time control is too tedious and most people eventually just auto resolve.
I want to see an inbetween system that auto resovles but allows for a lot of strategic input by the player.
ES2 started on that path and imo they or someone else needs to rexpand that for future 4x or turn based games.

In ES2 i felt like the tech tree was boring as fuck.

>baby's first pc wargame
what are more advanced wargames?

hes gonna pull some autistic horrid looking strategy game that like 10 people actually played cause its so complex in the bad sense of the word.

Field of Glory Empires (4x) let's you export battles to FoG 2 which is easily the best tactical game of the last decade. If you do every fight like this a single game would take 200 hours, but hey, it's there.

MoO2 actually has a pretty servicable system if we are talking exclusively space games.
