Like most Final Fantasies, it will likely be a linear experience until a point in late game where it opens up with a ton of optional side activities. They faithfully recreate the Midgar section with as much content as they can muster, or so they claim at least. The multi disc, multi-release nature also pays homage to the no holds barred, high production value nature of the original PS1 classic. This is a pro-consumer, pro-artistic integrity move so it figures your galaxy brain, contrarian, broke-ass bitch faggot self starts to chimp out about it.

If you actually played the demo, you can see this inaccessable path leads to another platform and small area with enemies.

You do go to this area later on after the boss fight, but most of it had changed due to explosions and the enemies are no longer there.

My guess is they just wanted to railroad players in the demo, which is understandable.

Devs have also ready said there will be side-quests in the main game with more areas. Something the original never had. Probably to justify this being a full game.
