In my own perception of AM and the characters as they are in the video game, each sequence is meant to compare the lives of each human to the limitations imposed on AM's consciousness; Like AM could never percieve anything but hate, the humans had their own limitations which led them to leading shallow lives, the only difference is, AM's mental distress isn't self-imposed. As for how the characters would look modernized?
Ted would be the type of guy to be an influencer or rapper. He's allowed his life to be dictated by what he thinks other people want from him. His only opinions are inoffensive ones, probably calls himself a moderate. AM tortures him by never giving him the opportunity to feel superior by achieving shallow goals. AM still treats him better than the rest, but everyone involved knows he's done nothing to deserve it. Ted is reminded every day of his life inside AM that he's never done anything worth remembering.
Ellen is a liberal/feminist type. Not the usual SJW snowflake stereotype, just a girl who desperately wants to be a YA novel protag. She's spent her life complaining and being self righteous, and uses her "lack of privilege" and "woke morals" to excuse her shitty habits and personality. AM tortures her by giving her opportunities to be a hero, knowing she's never learned how to do anything but complain.
Benny becomes a wannabe traditionalist/alpha male/patriarch douchebag. Instead of a hideous, primitive ape-thing that mirrored old Benny's morals, new Benny becomes a caveman, a (technically is a)human that doesn't rely on (((modern technology))) or (((systems of social governance))) to survive, and he reaps all the benefits of his new found freedom: He's constantly sick with all sorts of extinct plagues, he's much dumber and relies on instinct more than rationality, and he doesn't have the gut flora to eat most of anything.

I'll refer to the book: IHNM is the true horror of existential pain. Life as a neverending prison of solitary confinement. The hate of AM as a byproduct of the utmost isolation, which manifests itself into violence both physical and psychological. There's also the fact that humanity brought AM into the most miserable life possible, and this is a curse to him, which mirrors a dynamic between mother and child which we usually grow out of, but AM can't: this forces the reader to confront this feeling again, and you're faced with existential dread. These are deep philosophical question that depending on the reader can generate horror, but the line between this and cheap existentialism is really, really thin.

Edgy implies it has nothing to say other than it's own need to push the reader out of their comfort zone for the sake of looking brave and mature, ironically becoming overdone and childish nowadays. If you ask me, IHNM has something to say. AM as a character interests me to this day and I'd be lying if I said the story and the game haven't affected my own outlook on life. While IHNM is definitely bizarre, it's not just gore porn like The Human Centipede or pseudo-intellectual nonsense like Bioshock. It managed to have torture, 1-dimensional characters, and existential angst while still having a method to the madness. If you want to make a dark story, what's dark in your life? What terrifies you beyond belief and makes you feel like a cornered animal? If you have anything like that, create a world in which that is a normal, reasonable occurrence, so that readers can relate to it through your characters. Your characters don't just have to be blank slates to view your message through though, you write them as specialized tools that interact with your world in ways readers might want to if they were in that scenario. That way, your dark fantasy manifests itself in the fictional world, the hopelessness and pain of it all becomes realized by your characters, and your message gets told by the story you write.
IHNM had a world of arbitrary limitation and imprisonment. AM can only feel anger but is painfully aware of his limited emotional capacity, so now everybody else has to be trapped like he is. The humans were diverse in their backstory and mindset, interacting with the apocalypse in different ways to make the world feel alive. The story got across Harlan's message: Though death is scary, immortality and being aware of your own powerlessness is the worst torture of all.

I am not a writer, so there is a 100% chance this advice is complete shit and i just wasted your time.
