I think the issue lies with the fact that it had huge shoes to fill. Mass Effect back then was literally Star Trek tier in terms of popularity, and after having played as a literal Chad like Shepard, Ryder comes off as lacking. Also some scenes are just pure cringe at some point and the facial animations can be pretty bad sometimes.

If your character show no compelling progress in an entire game and the answer is "give it three sequels and a movie", then no. Ryder was inferior, earned no benefit of the doubt by his existence, was immensely rejected by the fanbase and no amount of apologizing changes that. But you know what? I played it through once when it came out at 1.0, I'm not autistic enough to do a second playthrough after the patches, if I'm playing something I've already played through, I'd rather it be a good game, Thief 1, Deus Ex, or heck, even Mass Effect 1 I enjoyed more than Andromeda.

I liked the Kett. I liked all the planets. There are some good questlines. The ancient technology plot was a lot of fun. The combat is some of the best in the series.

The problem is the characters. It doesn't matter if everything in the game is 9/10 RPG goodness when every single character is an insufferable twat. Andromeda doesn't make sense when you realize it has no Reapers, so unlike the Milky Way, it should have civilizations that are hundreds of thousands of years old, or millions, or tens of millions, hundreds of millions, or even billions years old. Nobody ever wipes the slate clean in Andromeda so it should be much different than the Milky Way.

aside from the memes about the bugs and animations (truly terrible shit), one of the two main complaints that came out of it was poor writing, particularly with dialogue and main plot not making much sense. and the repetitive, samey worlds that many felt were just slight reskins and none of it felt like you were exploring new worlds, just large empty maps with uninteresting things to do. Combat was largely praised, even early on with all the bugs.

Gameplay was the best ME has been, but the story, writing, and characters are so fucking bad that it's literally unplayable. I got about 40% through. Maybe 60-80%, hard to judge in a way.
