Anyone else bothered by how Shadow the Hedgehog had those circle drop shadows, even if SA2 and Heroes had realistic shadows ? Does it improve the framerate or something ?
Probably to maintain performance. I didn't play the game, though shadows like that are normally used in platformers for players to validate where their character will land.
Considering the positive reception of the movie and of Mania Sonic seems to be back on the upswing. Turns out people get annoyed when Sonic takes itself too seriously and would rather have smaller but sincere scenarios with him

The closest they've come to trying something risky again has been Forces, which seems like it began with someone who actually gave a fuck then just released before they even finished a proof of concept build.

I imagine they don't want to focus on the chaos emeralds too much. The chaos emeralds seem to do everything from being glowing batteries to sending you back in time. If they focus on them more then they have to give them rules which no one wants to do
Makes sense. The game did have way more stuff going on than previous 3D Sonic games, since there were constant explosions, bloom lighting effects and scenary getting destroyed. I guess they wanted the game to run at 60 fps.

Heroes was made by Sonic Team USA, who didn't have any experience with PS2 hardware. They did make the Gamecube port of SA2, which is probably the reason why Heroes is better in that console.
Shadow did have better handling tho. They probably made the game on that engine from the start, whereas with Heroes, they were forced to switch engines halfway through.
Shadow is a legitimately good game.
This. I've been saying for years that Shadow the Hedgehog perfected the Adventure-style movement and control, but people still always say it's too "floaty".

It's definitely good enough in terms of gameplay and presentation ( it had the best CGI cutscenes of the series up to that point ) It's the story and structure what lets it down. I do like it though.

I'll give you SA2 but SA1 was pretty fun if slightly buggy.
The plot was extremely stupid but it was fun in a B-Movie sort of way. The voice acting was really really bad but again it was cheesy. Character designs felt okay, level designs were varied, minigames were nice, in SADX the extra bonus stuff for finding all the medals was nice (even if you have to mod it back in with the PC port). Chao raising was fun although frustrating and I kept accidentally tripping over the little fucks.
I had a lot of fun as E-102 and used Big the Cat as a sort of palette cleanser between the other characters' arcs. I'd play a character to completion or boredom, beat a Big level or two, then hop into another character and repeat.
I still want to smack Knuckles upside the head though but that's another story.
They literally threw everything away with Heroes. It was a game aimed at casual players with no experience with the Adventure games. like, i can see why, since it was the first multiplatform game in the series, but it's still a step backwards.
how is Heroes more casual than Adventure? I'd say Heroes takes more skill to complete than Adventure. I can easily breeze through Adventure but Heroes takes longer and I die more often than I would in Adventure.

Best part for me was seeing characters from Knuckles' Chaotix running around again, also wrecking everything as Team Dark.
Otherwise I didn't really enjoy Sonic Heroes as much as Adventure but even Heroes was better than 2006.

Adventure 1 and 2 had great gameplay that focused on arcade style mastery similar to the genesis games. Everything after those two was trash yeah.

Finished 2.2 recently and it was pretty fucking good the final level might be one of the greatest final levels i've played in a platformer. That be said the controls are pretty fucking weird especially with how jump momentum works, if Sega released something like this it would get absolutely shit scores.

Also, if by final level you mean the last 2 non-boss acts, those are actually the levels not updated from 2.1 to my knowledge.
it accelerates extremely fucking fast like you can jump almost from a standstill and completely fly huge distances and it just doesn't feel like it makes alot of sense. I got used to it eventually but it never felt truly good and more like I was coping with it because of how good everything else was.

I loved that mini period where his quills were insanely long. Late 90s to super early 2000s was my peak Sonic fandom.
I liked it when Sonic looked like he could roll up into a ball, the extreme curvature in his design in Adventure helped express that. Modern feels so sterile in comparison.
