Even though they only came out 6 years apart, the PS2 and the PS3 feel like completely different worlds.
The PS2 was gritty, old-school, and cool, while the PS3 was sleek, shiny, and sterile.
Nintendo also suffered. Compare the GameCube to the Wii.

What happened?

Attached: maxresdefault.png (2412x720, 790K)

I thought things couldn't get more soulless then the Piss/Bone consoles came out.

Ps3 has far and away the best console UI of all time. Everything is just fucking there and you can access it in half a second. You don't have to go rooting around nested and hidden menus dodging Butterfinger advertisements to find your games, switch profiles etc. like you do on nu-360/Bone.

Wii is an easy second. What is your post on about? Ps3Wii was the sweet spot-- when consoles became internet-capable computers but hadn't yet started selling your data. Even the 360 Blades UI was great, it's only flaw was MS had a way to change it

Consoles needing a forward facing UI was part of the downfall

The problem is the aesthetics. The GameCube and PS2 felt retro and cool. The Wii and PS3, on the other hand, feel sleek and sterile.
I miss the old-school aesthetic that everything used to have.

>sterile
XMB is literally the best console UI I have ever used and it boggles my mind that it wasn't immediately the industry standard for every console from here on out.

It's a useful UI, but why can't it use cool graphics and fonts? Why does it have to be so sleek?

bump

There's no soul left in the vidya industry anymore.

do soulfags realize that there's a ps2 theme for the ps4 that has everything they're looking for?

It's the same with UIs in-games, they are devoid of any soul. This sleek shit needs to stop, they end up all looking the same and nothing sets them apart, everything has to be a hegemony these days, nothing can really stand out or have it's own personality. That's why they look so bleak and soulless.

Yeah, I think it's a way to appeal to normies. It all started in 2005. That was the year everything went to shit.

Because the drooling masses liked this better

I really like the early boot-up jingle on the PS3. Its removal was unnecessary.

Ew. What the fuck?

Yeah, the PS3 had it. The 360 actually had a pretty soulful UI in the early days but they changed it to this soulless garbage which resembles the Windows App UI which are designed to display advertisement.

Fucking boomer the PS3 BMX was fucking kino go play some Snes you faggot

That's not the oringal Xbox 360 UI.

i got it back via CFW
also the game bootup screen

too bad, you can't GET that og blades theme back! you had to update!

HAHAHAHA!

Apple

>ITT: The console I bought is the best.

peak console UI

Only literal zoomers call everything old as "old-school" just because you can't figure out what to call it.

The Playstation 3 had more soul when the startup said "Sony Computer Entertainment" and had a better sound, later they changed it to just "PS3"

Games then:

Games now:

That's a background, not a menu...

I wonder if they were going for the same themes, narratives and settings. Let's try one that does

PS3 was the last good Sony console. But man was it frame rate poison.

Dude this game is 7 years old

Dragon age origins on ps3, oof, and oblivion lol

Look at how much more soulful that one is. It's not just the simpler graphics, although that does make the game ironically feel more immersive.
The whole atmosphere feels more retro and slick.

>PS3 was the last good Sony console.
They literally made Cell to "filter out" all the "bad devs", so they just fucked over pretty much everyone.

Your "now" was almost entire decade ago.

Not him but it looks like shit. The only thing I could give you is that you need to fill the holes with your imagination.

and still one of the most played games

>Games then

>Games now

Progress. Kids these days don't understand how fast shit moved from early 90 to late 00s. Went from 2D to borderline photorealism in just over a decade. What a ride.

I remember the first time I booted up this UI and not knowing how to launch the game for about 10 seconds. God damn I was furious

>Goes around all day calling old things good because they "feel retro"
get a lobotomy dude

This. Wii/PS3 were peak console UI design.

>Staying more than 10 seconds on the UI
Don't you guys play games?

The Gamecube/PS2 did not feel retro at the time dumbass.
Fuck, the ps2 was the fucking matrix machine that played THE MATRIX on DVD.

I have a Xbox and my biggest complaint is the UI. Its absolute trash. Who the fuck designed it I can't stand it. I'd get a PlayStation but their controllers are almost as bad as a Nintendo controller.

I had a pirated double CD version of the matrix on PC

The Matrix was an old-school movie. Compare The Matrix to John Wick, it's like night and day.

XMB is based as fuck

This, I hate the PS4 interface compared to PS3. It was smooth as fuck and minimalist.

Minimalism is exactly the problem though.
Why does everything have to be minimalistic now?

>ps2 was op's first "serious" gaming
oof

holy shit please die

The PS2 literally jacked you into the Matrix. It was crazy.

Because low effort and budget.

>hates minimalism
>likes ps2 menu
I dont get it, the ps2 menu is way more minimalist than the ps3's

>PS3 was the last good Sony console
Hear hear. Its pretty telling the same craftsmanship didn't go into the PS4.

it is called the "toyota effect"

I recall people really picking on the XMB back in the day for some reason. I always liked it. Its even aged gloriously.

>gen 6 and earlier
>gaming mags would hire freelance artists to create their covers
>afterwards they just used game stock images

Attached: 9844864984_b1308aa67c_b.jpg (779x1024, 346K)

it's a menu, not a painting

Goddamn now I really miss that PS2 aesthetic again.

But you can!

Functionality over style. Minimalistic style has taken over in game Ui’s as well because it takes up the least amount of space while still displaying useful information
