Old 8 and 16 bit console games emulated. Preferably with a controller, but touch controls are okay for anything turn based like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6(3).
What emulators though? Not the official ports?
They want 10 dollars for chrono trigger. I paid for chrono trigger in 1996, they can kiss my ass.
I've generally had good results from snes9x, but I'm not super picky about things like filters and smoothing so if you're a connoisseur you may need to dig around.

Valkyrie Profile is a great game that not enough people have played.
For me, its POWDER
>roguelike, so its innately pick up and play friendly
>relatively streamlined for the genre and has a helpful tutorial for newcomers
>initially designed for a handheld (gba) to use as little buttons as possible for the genre
>available on nearly every platform, so you can practice on pc or just play on the commute
>portrait orientation support so you can hide your powerlevel in public
Cytus II is the best mobile game ever created
Is the phone port any good?
I got FFT WotL while it was on sale because I figured an SRPG is well suited for mobile play and the phone version unironically has the best visuals, but the controls weren't super well adapted and the battles were long and not so great for quick play sessions.
On the flipside, I found the Dragon Quest phone ports to be pretty great.
You'll be surprised how well the controls work on mobile.
So the platforming obviously isn't as great on a touchscreen as with a controller, but it's not very punishing either so it works well enough.
