Opposite. China has a massive pop so you get a lot of points but the triggers for world wide research proc earlier with only a single country dying to the last """man""". By the time it gets a beachhead anywhere else you'll etiher be too deadly to infect faster than kill or they'll be too prepared. And one Island will lock down and that's nearly a game over unless you get lucky with bird migration or "spontaneous outbreak". The game is too mechanical.
