Such a crime she didn't make it into GU. While I enjoyed the combat of it, IMOQ had more variety in characters and interaction, I believe. With all the new classes, it's still a bummer that 1/3 of the party in GU were Blade Brandiers, 0 Edge Punishers, and the only Adept Rogue to join you is just a glorified Steam Gunner.
Plus, you never got that deep interaction with the party, behind E mail chains (unless you use the limited greeting cards), ongoing specific quests, and just the overall dialogue. Having so few .hackers join you was such a letdown.

They kind of did the combat better in frägment. You could assign skills and items into quick menu (r1 + triangle for example). But not party commands for some reason.

Im planning to run a basically .hack tabletop game sometime, and I’ve got that saved in prep so I can play it every time shot gets ducky.
Quietly at first to see if anyone notices it through music and other sounds, but then eventually it’ll be an overriding note on top of everything.

And then Link came along and they shit all over everything yet again.

Fuck CC2 and fuck .hack and fuck anyone who thinks this series will ever amount to anything after they've tried so hard to fuck it over so many times.

Actually she was already complete in GU, but decided to sit back and become more of a spectator after realizing that she kinda fucked it up (since no one seems to be putting anymore effort after they realized the AI is doing everything for them at least on the digital side). Which led to the formation of Project GU with Pi's brother, Jun, in an attempt to try and control Aura using Morganna's code.

I don't doubt the supplementary material because if .hack does one thing well it's contradict it's own fucking lore with each new installment. The G.U. bonus disks talk about how she decided to become a passive system rather than an active one which fucked the entire internet because she's not taking the whole load, and that her daughter's death is technically CC Corp's fault for trying to use a dummy phase and causing someone to go insane and set the servers on fire. Which makes a lot more sense even if it's still character assassination of Aura. But you're making it sound like it got retconned again.

Yeah I have played a bit. I think I played to lvl 8 or 9. Kind of hard even in offline mode with npc friends. Selecting skills and commands doesn't pause the game even in offline mode, but you can make shortcuts for skills and items.

Unless they do another game in the original World setting, I don't really care. The celtic fantasy was great, but what they did with GU was much less interesting IMO. And the art style became a looot more over the top anime, which I didn't care for.

I don't think the games have enough depth in the combat for them to difficult. They're fun for a little bit, the problem with G.U. is the story is constantly broken up by running through 30+ minute long dungeons for 5 minutes of story AND half of each game being dedicated to the arena.
What .hack really needs to to focus on its characters more. It needs something like social links or special quests where you interact with these characters more. Each vol. is 14 hours long and you hardly ever fucking spend time with these characters.

Original PS2 games encouraged you to grind overlevel enemies due to the affection/affinity boosts you get from Rengeki plus getting great gear to trade to others. But even fighting equal-level enemies required a Rengeki or two during the course of the fight.

In the remake, it seems that equal level enemies die really quick to regular attacks and you barely get a chance to do anything else.

Never watched any of the anime or played any of the games.

.hack//sign is the first piece of .hack media created I believe, and it's essentially the prologue to the first game series.

Be warned that despite being a story about a videogame, there is veeeery little action in it. It's like 95% people standing around talking, which I guess is pretty realistic as far as MMOs go. The little action it does have is neat, but yeah it's very dialogue heavy.

funnily enough I'm playing through this whole series over the past month or so, currently finishing up GU. is the arena just horseshit or what? It seems like unless I'm leveled enough that my whole team just steamrolls everyone, every single match is the following

>I proceed to get stunlocked to death by three enemies who keep me in blockstun pretty much forever because when I'm done blocking one persons move the next person has already started attacking again, and who aren't stunned by anything but special moves, so I just run around the arena in a circle and han-geki counter until they die because anything else = comboed for half my life

The first 4 games, I'd say watch .hack//signs either before, during your playthough of IMOQ. There's also Liminality which are kind of like OVA's that came with the games, 1 for each game so you can watch those before each game. Moving on to the next chapter of the series .hack//roots anime then .hack GU. Everyone seems to hate roots but I enjoyed it plus I kind of like Ali Project.

honestly I feel like the more .hack stuff I experienced the more I could enjoy stuff that came after but maybe I just have extreme sunk cost fallacy (even though I pirated all of it) or am just a sucker for THING I RECOGNIZE style writing.
the problem with roots is that it seems like it deliberately tries to be awkward and hard to watch after the halfway point to emulate how "the good times" haseo is missing are gone, only that means you're watching hours of stuff that's pretty miserable to get through outside of the cool music and based towalaya. the ending was cool though
