He's pretty much mortally wounded from the start of the game and is keeping himself alive through sheer willpower or something so that he can finish his quest, so it's not all that much of an asspull.

Once judgement is defeated the jackal doesn't need you any more, so he lets you succumb to the poisoning or whatever it's hinted that your character has. The game this screenshot is from is called Hyper Light Drifter. The game itself has little to no dialog and the cutscenes are really shot. What OP is calling "Pretentious" is the big titans who only shows up for like 2 of the 5-second long cutscenes flashbacks and are already dead even before the game started. Really there nothing more then set dressing and I think the bigger problem with what little story the game has is this

Nah, the whole game is pretentious in its presentation. Hell, I'd even call it chuuni with the whole I'M COUGHING UP BLOOD AND SEEING GHOSTS AND EBIN FLASHBACKS crap that keeps popping up throughout. I like the gameplay, but the presentation is almost unbearably pretentious. Every design choice reeks pretentiousness, ranging from the minimalist menus/UI to the "atmospheric" "soundtrack" that infest it.

Oh, I agree the game is very up its own ass and while I enjoyed the gameplay and the game looks nice, I dislike the fact the devs tried way too hard to show how "cool and artistic" with how minimalist most things are in-game.

Its deliberate vagueness with its story, for one its not that interesting once you know what it is, its a bunch of tired fantasy and anime tropes, and secondly there is very little to actually interpret as your own, so why make it vague at all?

Here's one not alot of people know: the dev of Gone Home purposely scrapped and cut out multiple segments of their """game""" because, and I quote from the commentary, "it would've felt too videogamey and taken away from the deep story about true love". For example, one segment would involve you finding three pieces of a key to open a door, but that felt too videogamey, and the dev hated it.

Another example of this would be alot of Ps4 games like God of War. The game tries so hard to be this dark and brooding cinematic art film, and yet it's filled with moments where you're just walking down a hallway, or slowly lumbering down a hallway. There's a great webm of sped up gameplay where Kratos is doing nothing but hauling monsters down a hallway for 5 minutes to weigh down a switch. There's no reason for it and there's no way to skip it or speed it up. It's literally just there to pad out time.

Hyper Light Drifter is a kickstarter game that had a chunk of it binned before it release. I don't think it's as pretentious as some make it out to be, more like "we had all these ideas and realized we couldn't afford it all then picked our favourites." So you have all this big hype for shit that means jack (big spoopy biorobots, black ooze, dog god) and level design all over the place (ancient temple swamp, deserted undergound lab, crystal forest) that results in the player having to string what little story there is together themselves. I think it comes of as pretentious to people who read to much into it. It's just supposed to be cool backdrop for the action to take place in, like explosions in a Michael Bay film. It's not some 3deep5you game story or play wise. It's literally a bunch of people who got together and went "wouldn't it be cool if?" and made a game. They just needed to come up with their own ideas and apply some goddamn focus.

And to slap whoever implemented the hidden collectibles.

Never played it but the first that comes to mind is that gay ass RPG game with the skeleton guy who laughs. I can't even think of the fucking title but I know the plot is pretentious as fuck and revolves around you killing or not killing in a fucking turn based styled game where you get some twisty ending or some shit if you didn't kill anyone and the game tries to tell you you're a good or bad person.

Hotline Miami also comes to mind with it's fucking "conversation with the devs" at the end, and it's gay message about violence if you pick the right dialogue options, but it gets a slight pass because the game itself is fun

I've played it for a bit. It's a nice looking wallpaper, but the game part is boring since it's full of those puzzles that you pretty much figure out fast, but actually completing them is a chore. Like Limbo/Inside. Also weak writing. Over all Journey did it way better.

Obscuration of a simple narrative can be fine if the obscuration in itself is interesting and engaging. Return of the Obra Dinn, for instance, is a very simple story (almost disappointingly so, when you've pieced it all together), but the method of seeing a snapshot of events corresponding with each death of the crewmembers, in a non-chronological order, actually makes the simple story very engaging to unravel and piece together.
With games like Hyper Light Drifter, the problem is that the obscuration isn't fun to sift through, AND it's unrewarding to do so.

People calling Automata shallow while only citing a plot point that's spelled out almost immediately as if it's a hidden revelation really got old quick.

Scattering the story in random pickups/secrets throughout the entire map is the worst storytelling possible and I wish indie devs who do this understood how retarded they're being.

I'm pretty sure 99% of the people familiar with Rain World's backstory just read it on the wiki.

Same with people saying it's only liked because of 2B or that you need to play through it a million times to see the true ending. It's very weird how that game triggers retards so hard.

This. I feel like it's a misinterpretation and poor imitation of Dark Soul's method of unveiling narrative through item descriptions.
The reason it falls short to understand and copy DS, is because DS actually places the items/lore in relevant places, so that if a player reads each description as they pick up the items, the narrative is still unravelled in impactful, relevant ways.
Indie devs just like to scatter it all over the place arbitrarily. Putting it behind a platform challenge is more important than putting it in a location which aids the storytelling.

It's solid. Good artwork and animation (subjective, but whatever), the puzzles, while simple, never got too boring since they kept changing slightly. It's about 4 hours' worth of vidya, and I definitely didn't regret playing it. Very solid sountrack too.

I felt the ending was a big pretentious slap in the face to people who were trying to give the game a chance despite the Raiden twist. Having that kino final boss fight and then transitioning into Snake giving a 2deep4u speech despite the fact the idiot literally jumped into the Ocean to swim after a giant fucking mech was fucking terrible after all that cool Solidus shit. It felt like a fucking inspirational speech lecture and I hated every second of it.

I can definitely agree with this. It's a fun platformer and the the characters can be charming, but the story does get really pretentious at times.

I prefer Dustforce though.

This is my problem with Dustforce, I have Double S+ and got up to S rank in Peta Difficult before I realized I was the retard for playing anything in the "!". Those stages literally appeal to autists that have nothing better to do in their free time who are essentially turning into 1 trick ponies. I agree that many of the difficults can be obnoxious, but there are even more insane custom levels out there that. If anyone has Dustforce, make sure to install Dustmod, since that gives you a shitload of new levels, tools, and even has daily levels to compete in.

It kind of does. A player would probably finish the game an hour or two sooner on average if deaths just made you respawn at the beginning of the boss fight. The walk backs were absurd.

I don't see how MGS could be labeled as a pretentious game since it's execution is well done. If you want to say that games that make statements on things are simply pretentious then I guess ANY games that make any statement could be labeled pretentious. The case for MGS2 about snakes speech fits well within the story of MGS2 itself. As for Persona yeah, P3s ending isn't exactly ideal. Though I think P4 executed its themes fantastically for how the game played. I haven't played P5 so I can't make a statement on that.

Hatred's story was DUDE DEATH LMAO. Dark Souls story was vague and completely unimportant because the tough gameplay was the selling point. The only "theme" it had was that of being a stranger in a strange land in the wrong time who will never know the full story.
