They did the equivalent of selling all your index funds to buy bitcoins at their highest price, then sell them after they tanked. There was no gamble there, just stupidity and incompetence. Also the company was already gutted from the uncertainty that arose then THQ imploded, so I doubt there was much calculation going on at Relic, more like desperation and confusion.
