All those games aged well, and most normalfags didn't know FF6 existed until SNES emulation became a thing. So FF7 was the only FF game that anyone played, thus elevating it's critical acclaim higher than it should have been. As soon as people decided to play FF6 and other JRPGs from that era, they realized that FF7 didn't hold up nearly as well as it did on their first playthrough

Believe it or not, Cloud's noodly arms make sense. Spending five years in a tube will atrophy the fuck out of your muscles, so you're going to look like a stick. Add in superhuman strength due to genetic shit that lets you use the Buster Sword with no issue, and yeah, you're going to still have stick arms. Your body only bulks up in muscle when you tear what you've got and it realizes what you've got isn't enough. If what you got is enough for what you're doing, your body won't build muscle.

There's a reason the saying is "no pain no gain."

I can relate. Played ff7 for the first time in 2017 at age 26 and enjoyed it immensly.

I fapped to Tifa since age ~12 and was surprised to find I liked Aerith just a tad more.

I just recently finished it on the Switch, and, I mean, it isn't my fave. It's good, but it's not 6. What I liked most about Final Fantasy VII, and what i think it does better than most Final Fantasy games is that it serves up moments. You can tell the devs genuinely wanted to impress everyone that played it, from the loading screen-free start, to everything at the Saucer, or the neat visuals at Cosmo Canyon, FFVII's focus is on the creation of big moments. Now, the characters aren't as interesting, and the battles are less fun, but there are some moments in VII that genuinely warm my heart or get a few tears started up (not the moment you think it is) but VI is the better game with the cooler cast.

This, FF7's cool moments rival any other RPG in existence. The problem is, for every memorable moment there's another 3-5 hours of filler bullshit that ruins the pacing. Aside from Cloud & Sephiroth you won't care about any other character in the game, because those two are so well written they overshadowed anyone else. It peaks the first 4 hours from when you are exploring Midgar to seeing Cloud & Sephiroth's backstories. Everything afterwards is incredibly forgettable, almost all of the memorable moments in the game happen within the first 5 hour mark, and it doesn't get good again until you reach the City of the Ancients when Aerith dies, which remains fantastic until Cloud falls into the lifestream and you are forced to play as Tifa, where the games takes a huge nosedive into shitsville & never recovers

IX was formulaic, boring, and predictable.

I'll make a slight justification for the Brain-dead cloud angle. First the build was great, when cloud starts begging for a number from Hojo, it's impossible to see him as anything more than pathetic in that moment. And had i not known about crisis core or Zack through the whole thing, I would genuinely be disoriented by that swerve. As for the part with Cloud out of comission and playing as Tifa/Cid, the justification I got for that is the feeling of dread that hangs over disc 2. You can see meteor in the distance, as well as the weapons flying around. Aeris is dead, and she was one of the core characters. I could imagine some flannel wearing teenager in 1998 not knowing if the game would go so far as to actually kill the main character.
It's unfortunate that the game negates all that dread once you get cloud back. If i were booking it, I'd bring Zack as the replacement for like the 2nd disc, then have him wake up cloud for disc 3 to take down Sephiroth as homeboys. "For Nibbelheim, Cloud. For Gongaga, Zack."
